Currently my only shotgun is my family heirloom single shot 16 gauge. I would like to get some defense shells for it. All I can find besides bird shot is #4 and #1 buck and slugs. I have heard #4 in 12 gauge is good. Im assuming #1 would be decent or should I stick to slugs?

Thanks as always.

I would get some of both sizes of buckshot and see what patterns best in your particular gun.

Make your decision from personal experience.

I haven't bought any 16-ga ammo in ahhhhhh 25 years or so. IIRC, #1 Buck & slugs were all that were available then, but that may have changed.

Yes, the pattern board is your friend here. See what works best in YOUR shotgun.

#1 buck (.30 caliber) is standard size for the 16 gauge, and the only one I know of that is offered in current factory loadings....if you have #4 buck, then it is probably very old or a handload.
I use handloaded #1 in my 16s....as far as patterning goes, it gives up very little to the 00 buck loads in 12 gauge; the only difference is the larger pellets transfer more energy.

where have you found #4 buck for the 16 gauge? Please PM me.

As far as I know #1 buck is the only buckshot available, but should be just fine.

I could be mistaken but Im pretty sure I saw #4 buck in 16 gauge at Sportsmans Wearhouse. Im heading up there on Wednesday to buy some shells. Ill let you guys know what I find.

Make sure it's not #4 shot (which is much smaller). A commonly used size for turkeys and maybe pheasant sized birds and up.
I have seen some #3 buck in a catalog, once. Actually it was Old Western Scrounger. THey were importing a foreign brand (can't remember) that had a #3 buck load for the 16 gauge. I came really close to ordering it. That's the same size as used in the 20 gauge, so I figured it'd be fine in a 16, too.

Either way, don't be afraid of the #1 buck load. It will do just fine.
