I love this gun, LOVE IT!!! It's a Savage 93R BTVS. This is my first real rifle.

The only others I have are a Marlin Model 60, a Lancaster AK and a CVA smoke pole. So far, I've only fired about 200 rounds with it. Got to the point I was getting quarter-size groups at 100 yards with some 20 grain ammo. But am going to try some 17 grain rounds this weekend. I can't wait to take it squirrel hunting.

Anyone else have a 17 HMR? What are your thoughts?

Anyway, this gun has introduced me to the long range bug and I look forward to getting another long rifle somewhere down the road that can really reach out there and wallop some targets.

Very nice. The stock really compliments the stainless steel very well. I don't have a .17 HMR gun yet, but I plan on getting a Marlin 917VS later this year.

What kind of scope is that? That thing looks like a beast.

I have a CZ 452 Varmint in .17HMR. I had it out at the range last week shooting at 100 yard targets. They are a lot of fun. :)

The scope is a Millett TRS-1. It's an illuminated mill-dot. Very happy with it. I can see the holes in the paper at 100 yards. It's a 4x16x50. This gun is capable of tighter groups. I've seen some insane 200 yard groups posted on another site.

I also really dig the Accu-Trigger system on the Savage rifles like mine. It's great and really simple to adjust the trigger pull. Very crisp and smooth.

got to shoot one down at the range (range officers gun on a REAL slow day, just me and my girlfriend) and was VERY impressed to say the least. i was hitting the quarter sized black shoot and see spots at 50 yards with NO problem "with the sight OFF" yea i dont know how far it was off but it hit where i pointed. the amount off might have been more prevalent around 100 yds but was very impressed and put one on the wishlist. especially with the comfot of the thumbhole

+1 they are a blast to shoot, and capable of impressive accuracy out to reasonable ranges. Also very nice in that they have virtually no recoil and a satisfying, but by no means brutal, pop for report.

I have a marlin 917v with an after market RifleBasic trigger in it that breaks very light. Great little gun for the price, I am actually in the process of upgrading the scope, selling my BSA contender (the current weak link in the package) and looking to put a Leupold on it. I thought the BSA was a good scope.....until I bought a Leupold for my 700.

Nice looking set up you have there. I don't own a 17 HMR, but are they more effective on varmits than the 22 Magnum?

i have a savage model 93 heavy barrel 17 hmr.i use tnt hp ammo, very explosive out to 100 yds.it hits harder and farther then a 22 mag. just my opinon. longest shot was 168 yard headshot on a groundhog

I have a Savage 93R17. Fantastic. I use 20gr Hornady rounds and find that they're dead flat to 150 yards. The ammunition is of much higher quality than .22WMR but a savage barrel helps.

I made a head shot on a ground squirrel at 157 paces. Not quite good enough to arc 'em in past 175+ yet. (That's when the .223 comes out!)

Enjoy

I love my Savage 17. But I saw an ad from Midsouth today with 22mag ballistic tips. Probably change how I look at 22mags now.

I also have the savage 93...I forgot which model, but similar to yours with bull barrel and accutrigger, but not SS and with cheaper stock. I still really enjoy shooting it.

At 50 yards, it makes crators out of the metal flip-up targets  when 22LR's barely scrach the surface. At 100 yards it doesn't make crators but generates a very satisfying THUMP!! It's a blast to nail them metal targets at 100.

I have a Savage rig similar to the OP's. I really like it but I'm not to keen on the accu-trigger. It feels really sloppy to me.

17.

Hey there :
I bought (2) of the 93R17 rifles, One for me and one for my son.
These are very impressive. I am not a Savage fan by any means. But must admit this little gun shoots extremely well. We use the 17 grainers and they are explosive to 100. After that they seem to be less expanding but deliver more penatration. Works very nice on most Varmints. We use them for coytee guns and love the light weight. I was draging around my 13 plus LBs rifle for coytee and fox. With the heavy snow this year in Michigan it really got to me . So we got the lightest 93R17s we could get and so far they have worked very well. I had to do some honing and polishing to get them to function right but that seemed to do the trick.
They tip over woodchucks very well too. As far as the bushy tails ? Best make only head shots. These things totally blow out the back sides.

Thanks for the kind words folks. I've yet to hunt with it as I've just had it a couple of weeks now and the squirrel season doesn't open here until May 15. So right now I'm just plinking like a mofo.

I haven't really destroyed anything with it yet other than paper. I did shoot some broken clay pigeons sitting on a post at 25 yards. But those were gimme shots after I sighted this rig in. It really is just a freaking blast to shoot. Once I do some hunting I'll post some results and thoughts here of it.

don't have a pic of it available but I like my little TC Contender 21" 17 HMR.

My brother has a 917 that is a damn nice shooter as well.

both those rifles are terribly boring at 150 yards... :) lol

Nice .17 you got there!

I've got a Ruger Hvy Barrel 77/17 that I absolutely love. If I do my part it'll shoot 1/2 MOA & crows & muskrats get destroyed with it on a regular basis.

Enjoy.
