Was just over at the Taurus website and saw that they have a whole expanded line of revolers in .17 HMR. A few were little snubbies. Exactly what niche - if any - does this fill? I can't really see this gun/cartridge combo being a great carry/defensive choice. :uhoh: I see this cartridge as a small game round but maybe I'm missing something.

Wow, kinda has me stumped. Maybe for short-range defense against rabid Prairie Dogs?

What's the velocity of a .17HMR from a 2" barrel? Under that of a .17 pellet gun?

sounds like the perfect gun for gun shop commandos to recomend to little old ladies!!! Heck talk about reduced penetration! I wonder what kind of penetration and velocity numbers you would get out of the 17 in s snub barrel?

Ya, I'll take the .22 mag 1st thank you, but prefer to stick with my .223 and 12 guage for home defense. Can't carry yet although I'm looking at getting a revolver for that purpose when I get CCW (by either getting it passed in KS or moving to a state that has it). But this one won't be on my short list.

Just another example of the people most in need are the most oppressed from obtaining one, but I think it could be used by inner-city landlords or maintenance workers and the like.

I know at least one superintendant of an apartment buiding who uses a pellet gun to take care of vermin.

But then, why not a .22? Ideally you would want something that's not too loud, and won't ricochet too much. I don't know how the .17 would compare.

I think it would compare poorly with the same model in .22 LR in amost every circumstance. But, I really have to credit Taurus with offering such an extensive revolver line up. They seem to offer it all and just let the buyer decide if it has a niche or not.

Y'know, I think I was wrong earlier ("It's to sell!").

They might be kind of fun, and that's all the reason a person needs.

Definately marketing... There's no real reason for a 2" .17 snub... It's just silly. An 8 shot 22LR loaded with very subsonic 60 Gr solid ammo has a place... very quiet, very respectable penetration, but not a .17...

You can't even really make much of a case of having a rifle and a pistol/revolver with the same ammo... If I'm out hunting with a 17HMR rifle, I'd rather have a .357, 41 or 45 Colt on my hip than a revolver that happens to be able to share ammo with my rifle.

From NAA's website 2" bbl. Black Widow .17HMR 17gr.
