I've had very good success with my converted Ruger 10/22M to .17 HMR. Most significant improvement in terms of reliability for the gun is the installation of a Volquartsen Exact Edge extractor. (After examining the ones I bought (they are relatively cheap) you could actually modify the stock extractor to a similar profile by filing an undercut on the surface of the extractor that contacts the casing and making the point sharper.) Buffered bolt stop also helps. The stock one on my gun broke under the faster recoiling .17 HMR.
