Looking for some suggestions on a Scope for my new .17Hmr Rifle.

Here are the specifics:

.17Hmr Savage 93R17FVSS (Stainless/Synthetic) with accutrigger

I will be using the rifle for the following:
90% of the time it will be used to punch paper at 100/150 yards
10% of the time it will be used as a Varmint Rig (Woodchucks, Rabbits etc)

I am looking to spend no More than $300-350 (at the most) on glass. Looking for something with more magnification than a 3-9x but dont need to get too ridiculous. Possibly 4-14X or even as high as 18x or 20x on the top end.

So what do you guys think? Looking for decent glass as I want to take advantage of the accuracy of the .17Hmr but dont want to break the bank. The rifle only cost $269.00.

Opinions on some of the smaller name scope companies would be appreciated. Nikko Sterling, Sightron, Swift, Millet etc.. I know the Leopolds, Bushnells etc are out there, just not sure if you are paying for the "name" or the quaility of product...

Thanks
all opinions/advice is very much appreciated.

Jeff

I put a 3x9 Millett on mine. Wish I had gone higher. You don't have to pay the big bucks for a scope that's built to withstand heavy recoil. Sure, you pay some for the "name" but they earned the name. For your stated purposes I don't think you'd need a "name".
I think it is great fun to be able to see through the scope as the bullet hits. No recoil, no barrel lift, no blink. I am the scourge of the Sabine River turtle population to 200 yds.

I would look for 3 scopes in that mid power range; pentax, nikon , or burris.
and if not them, the most underrated mid power scopes by far, are the Muellers; very, very good.
I have a hi power Tasco, varmint series, and i really like them, but the are limited to a 42mm objective, it is not good in low light. look for 44mm or bigger, but if 42 is okay with you, look for a Tasco varmint series, mid power.
the bushy in 3200 is good, but not as good as any mentioned above, except the tasco, it is better than the tasco, but is much more money. The others are better in every way. The scopes you mentioned above are also very good.

Here a lot of good things about the Weaver v16

Personally I'd look for a used Leupold VXII 4-12 or VXIII 4.5-14 either with Adjustable objectives

why do you need 18X power for a gun that doesn't have an effective range very far past 200 yards?

I put a 3-9 on mine, it works really well.

Kyle.. I dont need 18x but I wouldnt mind having 14,15 or 18x. Like I said, the rifle will be used for target shooting 90% of the time. I would like to be able to see what I am shooting at and see the very small holes in the target. I have a Zeiss conquest 3-9x 40 mounted on my white tail gun and I dont think it would cut if for percise target work out to 200 yards. My opinion though.

Thanks for the replies.. keep um coming. Any more suggestions?

Thanks
Jeff

I put a Simmons 6.5x20 Whitetail Classic on my .17hmr. I find it to be nice glass for this money. It's held up well over the past few years on my Savage 17hmr, and at this price I put another on a Stevens .223 as well. "Only accurate rifles are interesting" and these are my bargain basement interesting rifles. YMMV, of course.

Bushnell Legend. Well made, very clear and easy on the wallet. Several options to chose from. I didnt want to spend big bux on a Leupold for my .17, the Legend was right in my price range and performs great. I have the 4-12 x 40 with the multi-x reticle but wish I had got the 5-15 x 40 with the Mil Dot reticle instead. Both are under $300. I know some of you like your sweet 17 scopes but the chances of getting a good one are inconsistent. I stayed away from them because I've heard of too many problems. As most of you already know when it comes to glass, you get what you pay for.

BSA sweet 17

Use the extra $$$ to put on bull barrel and trigger work then you will have a tack driver

Yeah, I've heard a lot of pleasant things about the Weaver V16 as well. No experience with one, but I'm going to def. give it a good look when I get around to adding a .17 hmr to my collection.
