Looking around manufacturers' web sites, I've noticed something. They seem to be abandoning the .17M2 completely, in autoloaders, bolt guns, everything.

Marlin no longer lists anything in the cartridge, nor does Ruger. Ruger doesn't even give you a spare cylinder with a .17HMR Single Six. Savage still appears to offer a couple Mark II F variants in .17M2, but that's it.

All of them have a full line of .17HMR guns, though. The .17HMR seems to have become a well-established standard round now.

Do you think that .17M2 will be relegated mostly to custom and modified .22LR guns in the future? It's starting to look that way.

Ive seen threads on rimfirecetral and despite being not as popular as the HMR i dont see it going away. Ive got both and the HM2 is the perfect squirrel rd.

Mine are both CZs.

Ballistically, the .17M2 offers no real advantage over the .22lr and it costs twice the amount. Most manufacturers are fazing out the M2 for the lack of demand.

The HMR will stay around as its more powerful than the .22lr and offers distinct advantages over the .22Mag such as flatter trajectory and better accuracy past 100 yds.

Alot of people may disagree with that, myself included.

The mach2 is a fun little round and while not as hot as the HMR, it is quite a bit cheaper to shoot than HMR. I've got several Mach2's and a couple HMR's and they both have a place for the people who enjoy them.
