Picked up some 185 gr sjhp .45 bullets when other .45 bullets were non-existent in our area but unable to find a specific reloading recipe for the sjhp. Have 3 reloading books and none reference sjhp. I use Blue Dot, 2400, Acc #5, H110 and Unique for various other loads. Anyone know if I can use JHP or XTP recipes for the SJHP that I have using the powders that I already use? Thanks.

If it is a semi jacketed hollow point, yes, you can use JHP data with reasonable care. As usual, start low and work up. AA #5 will work well.

Welcome to THR

Unique or AA #5 will work.

All the other powders you listed are slow burning magnum class powders and not well suited to the low pressure .45 ACP.

Use jacketed bullet data for the same weight and bullet shape.
Do Not Reduce the starting load any further then it already is.

The risk with Semi-jacketed bullets & light loads is, the jacket may stick in the bore, and the lead core continue on it's merry way down range.

Thanks for your quick reply. Yep, new to THR and new to metallic reloading. I will start researching JHP recipes as suggested.

Thanks. This is a big help for a novice just getting started. Been shotshell reloading since the 80's but decided to try reloading metallic when factory loads disappeared. My problem was that I wanted to start metallic reloading when all the reloading components started to disappear. :)

Yes, tough time to get started. I missed Unique in the post, and as rcmodel posted, it will work great as well.

Ultimately ended up with two test recipes that I think are OK. #1 recipe = 9.4 grs of Accurate No5 (avg 960fps) and #2 recipe = 7.5 grs of Unique (avg 1030fps). OAL was 1.225. I was using a full size Springfield 1911. I've only tested 5 of each recipe so far as I had some issues seating WLP in some old Armscor brass. I reamed out the Armscor brass and finally got the primers to seat. The Federal brass I used was a non issue...primers seated perfectly. If either of these two recipes raise any red flags with experienced reloaders please let me know. I am going to work up maybe a dozen of each load in the next couple days to get a better overall fps average and also check my grouping. I'm not a bullseye shooter...center mass consistency is what I am looking for right now. Will work on the 'X' later on.

Remember is metallic loading a lot of manuals only list Max. So you need to reduce 10% and work up. Some manuals have starting and max but not all. So if only one listing it will be Max.

Be safe.

Thanks Blue. Previous post warned me not to start too low because of being semi-jacketed bullets so I started about in the middle of all my loading sources. Guess I got lucky with this load and got a good fps average. However, a dozen more of each load will tell me if I need to make adjustment. Thanks again for the feedback.
