Anyone reloading XTP's for their 45's? I'm gonna make my first reloads ( Pistol ) soon using Winchester Brass and 185 grain XTP's. Looks like I'm gonna go with Accurate #5 for powder.

Any experiences with these components?

I've use the 185grXTP in my XD45.

I used a max load of ClaysUniversal for about 1,100fps.

Shot adequate for the mission at hand.
Not match accurate, but accepatble. For match accuracy I'd use Win231 at a more leisurely pace. About 850fps.

FWIW; I've gotten better accuracy from the Sierra 185gr JHC.

That is a good bullet and a good powder. AA #5 is an excellent choice in .45 with plated or jacketed bullets..

W-231 can make some very accurate loads in .45, as well as others, but W-231 is a time proven powder for lead bullets and the .45.

I like WST, W-231, AA #2, AA #5, Competition, N310, & N320 in the .45

Almost any decent lead 200 Gr SWC will shoot very well in most .45's.

The Ranier 200 Gr SWC is extremely accurate in the .45. I also like the Berry's 200 Gr HP & 185 Gr SWC.

Lyman no 48 Reloading handbook reccomends an OAL of 1.175". I would extend that to 1.230. Experienced hooking of the case mouth on the ramp at the shorter length. (Kimber Custom 2 .45)

I would still try it first at the reccomended 1.175 oal first. see if your firearm feeds it well, then go about changing the length if nessecary. My Springfield 1911 handles rainier 230 frm just fine at that oal.

I load the XTP 230g for my home defense rounds. I use HP38 and set the OAL at 1.235" My Kimber UCII likes them that way. My Colt Gov 5" will shoot anything I put in it, even hot glue sticks. You will like the XTP. For day to day practice stuff, I shoot my own cast lead.

I use the 185 XTP with HS-6 at 1100 fps +.
I run this load in a Wilson "Carry Comp". The light bullet at top velocity lets the compensator work about as effeciently as possible in .45 ACP.

Excellent advice all. Much appreciated. I already have the 185 gr XTP on hand. 100 to be exact. The powder choice is the variable at this time.

Great bullet. I've worked up a few loads that are very accurate in my guns with the 185 XTP, Nosler's 185 JHP and Montana Gold's 185 JHP. For a very accurate (Bullseye velocity) load I love 4.3 grains N-310 - cycles most guns with stock springs. For general range use, 5.5 grains N-320, 5.4 American Select or 4.7 grains WST for a little higher PF. These are outstanding bullets and will shoot well with any suitable powder pushing them at substantially higher velocities but I've sorta moved on and don't bother going there any more myself. FWIW, I use 1.230 OAL with the XTP's.

I use 5.8gr of titegroup on my 185gr JHP (montana gold), 1.210 OAL. The higher pressure from the5.8gr makes it burn cleaner.

Thread Resurrection.

I ended up with Titegroup for powder. I still have the 185 gr XTP's and am ready to load. However, I am having some trouble finding data relating to Titegroup and the 185 XTP bullet.

Would 5.9 grains of Titegroup be too much for a 45acp in a 5" 1911?

I plan to set length at 1.23 min OAL.

I use TiteGroup with 230 gr XTP/JHP but have neve found a load for this powder and a 185 gr bullet. As previously mentioned W231 is an excellent choice.

There's a lot of other data but this should get you where you want to go.

Hornady 7th Edition:

185 Hornady HP-XTP / Titegroup Powder
Start: 5.1 - 850
Max: 6.6 - 1,050

Sierra Data Edition V:

185 Sierra JHP or FPJ Match / Titegroup Powder
Start: 4.5 grains - 750
Max: 6.2 - 1000

I was playing around with AA #7 and WSF for my new Kimber 3". I found that my Kimber didn't like AA #7, but really does well with WSF. The suprise came when I used AA #7 in my Colt 1911. Really improved accuracy over W-231...

You might have a look at AA #7 and WSF.

D. Manley, does the Hornady manual list a min OAL for that data?

I'm away from my manual now but I load my 185 JHP's @ 1.200 and 230's @ 1.230. IIRC, Hornady actually recommends just a bit shorter than that on the 185 and I think 1.23 is what they show for 230's. I'll try to remember to check the book sometime tomorrow if no one shows up to the thread with one handy.

It was 200 Gr, but it thought that they are both loaded to the same O.A.L. They both look nearly the same, just one is shorter. I could be wrong here as I have not actually measured a 185 Gr factory load. Maybe someone has some and can tell us.

Walkalong is probably right...checked the manual today and Hornady does show the OAL for both 185, 200 and 230 grain XTP's to be 1.230.

And Lyman 48th shows 185 grain HP/XTP at 1.175" OAL...Go figure...

I still will load them at 1.190". It's where I get the best performance from this 3" Kimber...
