Is the 1858 Rem new army police in .36 cal sold by Cabelas a realistic reproduction? Did police of the time actually carry this model?
Also, is the new model pocket .31 a realistic reproduction?
I have the 1858 Rem in .44 but it looks lonely sitting there.:D

I believe there was a .36 cal police/navy, but I don't think the cabelas model is a faithful representation of it. I believe pietta uses one frame size for all their .36/.44 New Model Remingtons which isn't quite right. I believe the original .36s were on a smaller frame than the .44s.

The steel framed .31 is probably a faithful reproduction, but I don't believe Remingtons were ever built with brass frames.

But I'm shooting from the hip here so use a big grain of salt.

dont know, they<Pietta> have a 1858 model with a 8inch barrel and adjustable sights with a stock floating around too...

Now, I was under the impression that organized police in the US weren't really established until the 1900's(Sans the wandering constable here and there)... it's kinda bad because I'm supposedly studying this stuff.

But anyways, because of the relative timeframe, they would have graduated to cartridges instead of using BP... that's if I'm right

The only original brass framed Remingtons were produced for the Confederacy since brass was more available and cheaper. Like most original Confederate pieces they are rare. The problem with using brass was that it didn't have quite the hardness of steel and over time the tolerances in the frame would diminish, eventually rendering the gun too dangerous to fire. This is still the case. I have several myself just because I like the look. In actual use it was soon reasoned wise for a soldier to let the brass go dull along with his buttons, buckles or anything else that might become a target for snipers or sharp shooters.

To my knowledge the confederacy never manufactured copies of the Remingtons. Several makers copied navy colts in brass frame plus the Spiller and Burr, but no Remingtons. Last I checked the brass framed remmies sold by cabelas are fictional, much like the .44 caliber colt navies.

No the Cabela police models are not the same as the real gun, however dixie gun works has a reproduction that is very close. but what the heck, all of them ar fun to shoot, so go for it. if you want realism you have to fork out the big bucks. IE buy an original

Pietta 44 vs 36

Howdy Folks,
I have both the 36 and 44 Remington made by Pietta and the 36 is a smaller frame than the 44. Like a big brother and little brother.
