Hello all. I have been browsing the site for a while now. I love it! I have been in to guns all my life, but recently i was bitten by the bug. Ok, i have been bitten alot... I have been getting more enjoyment and spending more time at the range than i ever have with any smokeless guns..

I have a question on one of my Pietta 1858's. The brass frame. After a day of shooting i tore down the revolver. I have only done a full tare down a couple other times on my other CB guns. But never on this particular revolver.

I disassembled it cleaned it up and reassembled it. I seems to action fine but when i de-cock it the cylinder kinda comes lose and turns the other way sometimes in between chambers sometimes to the next opposite chamber. But when I pull the hammer back to fire position it does advance and has good timing to the following chamber.

None of my other BP or smokeless revolvers do this, when you put the hammer to rest the cylinder stays put.

Any ideas guys?

Thanks a lot and hello!

Jared

It sounds like your bolt is not going into the locking notch in the cylinder so that when you lower the hammer and remove the pressure from the hand the cylinder is free to rotate backwards. You can see the bolt in the lower right rear of the frame cylinder window. Generally this is caused by one or both of two situations. The bolt is too wide to fit the notch or the notch has been peened slightly and the bolt head will no longer fit. You can watch the bolt as you cock the revolver as you aproach full cock the bolt will rise to touch the cylinder then just at or just past full cock you should see the bolt drop into the notch and hear a light tick. If it does not then you have one of the two mentioned problems.
One other possible situation is that you did not tighten the bolt trigger spring fully and there is insufficient pressure to raise the bolt to lock.

denster you were right. I took the trigger guard off and snugged up the stop spring a little more. She works flawless again.

thanks a lot!
