For the first time I got out to shoot my new uberti 1858 new model army remington for the first time today after about a year having it. Only shot 6 balls to try it out. From about 35 yards standing i pulled one because I did not pre fire the chambers little hang fire. too hard around here to find caps to waste. Shot at a med pizza box my target stand of choice lol. about 25 grains of 20 year old goex clear shot hornady .457 balls rem caps. wish it was small game season there was a nice tree rat right there.

Do you oil the chambers as well? Because of that possibility I don’t. I don’t believe in wasting caps either.

Very nice shooting by the way!

Thanks i use olive oil hole gun and chamber to buy run a dry patch to get most of the oil back out. If I'm going to hunt I'll use a cap tho.

I have never pre-fired a chamber. All the books say to do it but i think the authors are in the cap business. Stick a pipe cleaner in the nipple and twirl it around to get out any gunk and then use a paperclip on the flash-hole. That's what i do and i never have hangfires or misfires.

Ya if I can't see tru the nipple it should be fine i my not have seated the cap right on the pull. Trying on the uberti is at 3.5 lds

A couple of cotton swabs and some high proof alcohol takes care of oil in the chambers. I don't pre-fire the chambers either, because I'm cheap and caps DO cost money... ;)
Snapping the caps on the empty chamber fell almost as when u drop the cap tin because I can't open it.

If I wanted a cartridge gun I'd buy one. I shoot C&B revolvers because of what they are, not how fast they can be shot. I enjoy the loading and even the cleaning process. It's part of shooting one.

Indeed. However I have enjoyed making and using paper cartridges. It certainly speeds up the reloading process and would be nice in the field where you wouldn’t need a powder flask and measure, or be concerned with any wind messing with the powder pouring.

I'd have nothing against paper cartridges - it's what they used in the Civil War. And I might just try it if I loaded in the field. With a bad back and legs I'm not in the field any more, just enjoying myself paper punching. For us old farts, the guy with the most toys in the end wins. Sometimes I almost feel like a fisherman with all those gadgets.

Monday mornings range visit. Had intended to shoot 10 or 15 rounds of 45C, try loads for TrailBoss, had a fifty round box of each 6.2 and 6.6 grains, in the Rogers and Spencer for side by each accuracy, not much difference, maybe a nudge to the 6.6 grains, anyway was going to do that and switch to the cap cylinder. Shot all 100 rounds. Memo to self, we got into black powder for the load as you go aspect, more time on the line, less time at the reloading bench. 100 empty brass shells added to the "got to reload these pile." The conversion cylinders are fun to shoot.

I don't wast caps either.I dont like to admit this but i have tried it on a couple of occasions on one of those occasions i still had a load in the barrel and the resulting kaboom sent a ball carreening off my car door AKA "safe direction" BTW i was trying to be safe and pulled the caps because i could not unload/fire
and it went a couple of months and i was just cleaning to reload and reuse.I hope my mistake helps others.
