Hi everyone on THR,
I’ve always had either 1858 new army’s or ruger old army’s now have a 1860 army having trouble keeping the caps on the gun while firing it, I’ve used both Remington and cci # 10 have to pinch them down a lot. Where can I get new nipples for it and does anyone know the proper thread size older model Uberti? The nipples on it are straight, the ones on my Remington are tapered. Thanks.:)

I'd recommend Remington #10s, maybe pinch them to fit. You could even pinch all the caps ahead of time to get them to fit without needing to pinch them at the range. That would save you some time. I use Remington #10s for everything, they are good reliable caps. Never had a misfire in my pietta Remington when using them.

You could just dry fire it a couple times. That should swell up the end of the nipples.

Note: I haven't tried this myself as I don't like beating up the hammer or the nipples.

Oh, for Pete's sake. No. Don't go intentionally abusing your guns. Geez.

I believe those threads are 12x28, but take one to a hardware store and ask them to check it or compare it to a known machine screw or bolt with that thread. They may be 1/4 by 28.

The Treso 12x28 part number is 11-50-16; Track of the Wolf's catalog number for those is PCC-A.

Treso makes a number of 1/4x28 threaded nipples. One part number is 11-50-1; Track's catalog number is RST-A. However, that's a fairly long nipple intended for the horse pistols (Dragoon, Walker) so it's probably too big for your 1860 Army. A better choice might be 11-50-11 (Track's PST-A). I'd call them and talk to them first if your's turn out to be 1/4x28.

Are you seating the caps down onto the nipple as far as it will go? If you are not already doing so, take a wooden dowel or the eraser end of a pencil and push the cap down on the nipple as far as it will go...no need to grunt and sweat, just seat it all the way down to the bottom. If they still come off after seating them then you need smaller caps or bigger nipples.

Treso nipples with Remington #10 caps are the most popular combination.

As Mykeal said, junk the stock ones if they're not working for you.

A lot of people swear by the Treso nipples, myself included but...I had problems getting them a year or so ago and substituted stainless steel from TOTW instead. They seem to be identical to the bronze nipples in shape and function. So if you can't get the Treso's don't be afraid to use stainless steel nipples. I've got a feeling that they'll hold up better than the bronze ones but I haven't managed to wear either out after thousands of rounds.
