Hey :
I have an 1860 Uberti , But now want a Cartrige version.
Any help will work.
.45 long colt . How accurate are they ?
What loads can I use.
I reload and can use BP .

I worked on my 1860 and have taken all the issues and bugs out of it , It shoots nice and I like it. but now wish to get a cartrige model .
I would like to stay with the 1860 , {Looks and feel}

I have plenty of .45 long Colt brass and can do anything needed there.
Are hard cast bullets Ok ?
I can use soft lead if need be. I have a Magma Caster and can cast whatever I need. Pure lead ?

I would like to stay with BP only and want no crazy mixes .
I don't mind max loads after she gets broke in a little.
I will likely use Pyrodex "P".........

Thanks for and info.

My conversion

I shoot a .44 Colt with a Navy grip frame. I find it spins better for me, but my friend has his with the Army grip. Much bigger mitts. I really think you'll enjoy getting one in what ever caliber you choose.

Needless to say, we antiqued them and I dropped off a bunch of barrel to boot. It was a new 7 1/2" blue.

I won't be on the line at Perry with it this or any other year, but it really shoots much more accurately with 4.5 grs. of 231 than it does with a full case of 3F.

I cast most all of my standard velocity pistol bullets at 20-1 and have never had any problems shooting black with them. There is no real 'upset' needed with the modern conversions and the modern inside lubed bullets.

I do shoot 40-1 heel bullets in my .41 Colts. Any harder bullets just lead the crap out of it.

I just don't think pure lead would be needed.

When Colts did the original conversions they used the 44 Colt cartridge and made rimfire and centerfire versions of it. They used the heeled buulet and a case similar to what is now the 44 Special, just shorter. I have seen newly made 45 long Colt cylinders but to my eye, there is not enough cylinder left after taking out that much metal. I have a 44 Colt and enjoy it. If you really want a 45 long Colt, you might consider the Model P and replace the grip frame with the 1860 style.

Your antiqued Colt open top looks mighty fine, sir!

Thanks.

Hey :
I have had several .45 long Colts..
I just wanted one in an 1860 . I have the Cap and Ball model 1860 and love the feel and looks.
I am not into more power .. I have many guns that can handle that for me.

I have hunted with and killed many deer at very close range with handguns .
.45 acp at 900 fps/200 grainers.... .45 long Colts that were so pumped up they wore the guns out and even .357s that took a very nice 200 lb 8 point..

I wish to whack one at very close range with a BP hand gun. My Cap and Ball .44 kind of makes me a little nervous about touching it off even at close range. But with a 200 to 250 grainer at even 850 fps I am pretty sure of my results..
I have deer walk right up to me way too often and must take them out if I am to continue hunting that farm.. Owners Rule...
So rather than blasting them all with my Encore , I want to have some fun with this..

When I go hunting , I go to kill something. If it is legal and walks in front of me I will take it..
Last year a big Woodchuck came out on opening morning.
I looked around and saw no monster bucks waiting to be shot so I took that chuck.
I was just as pround of that chuck as I would have been of a nice buck..
I took a nice fat coyotee the same way...

I think I have killed too many deer and lost my first love ...
This kind of ticks off my son at times.. Ok, what did you kill now ????

He was really ticked last year when I said 2 bucks. About 10 minutes apart..
He paid me back with a big 8 point the next day. :)
