I live in a very isolated place where black powder weapons and shooting accessories are near impossible to find. after waiting months, I just received shipment of a Armisport 1861 Springfield and just realized the nipple uses the ~1/4" four-wing percussion cap. (Another HUGE hassle to procure)

Is there anyway I can replace this nipple with one that uses a standard cap?

kwhi43 mantions a #11 conversion musket nipple for standard U.S. musket threads that's available from The Log Cabin Shop.

Here's his post:

Here's the Log Cabin Shop index, look for the nipple category on the left:

Blomquist makes some of these conversion nipples. If you need to verify threading check with him directly:

Musket caps are also sold at some Walmarts.

According to the Armisport catalog, all of their Civil War replica rifles have an M8X1 thread pitch on their nipples.

Dixiegunworks.com doesn't list that size in their #11 metric section, but you can email them. Don't forget to tell them it's an Armisport 1861 Springfield and they'll know what size thread it is.

Track of the Wolf has an Ampco bronze nipple in that thread pitch listed, but you would have to ask them if it's for a #11 cap or US Musket size.

I've got an Armisport 1842 Springfield rifle musket, I ordered an extra Musket nipple from Dixie a while back but I couldn't remember off the bat what it's thread pitch was.

I've got a "local" source for US Musket caps an hour north from me, but it would be nice to have a couple #11 nipples just in case.

Thanx for your input guys. I have decided to look at the glass half full option. I found a couple tins for the four wing caps and really like how they feel under my stubby fingers; also, I have ordered replacement nipples, from Track of the wolf, that use #11's so I will have two cap sizes to choose from. Being in a remote area I just deal the hazmat shipping charges for any orders of caps or powders.

keep an eye peeled.....several of the on line suppliers have recently ran special buys selling /percussion caps, musket caps in bulk orders with free freight &/or no hazmat fees.

grice gun shop outa PA is one from memory???

also TOTW and several other sells B.P. with no hazmat charges probably no hazmat too. look into it you can find good deals just need to be ready to buy in bulk.

There is a reason those muskets used a large cap. Back then, and now, igniting a large charge of black powder is easier with a larger amount of fulminate. Musket caps are not that hard to procure anywhere in the US. If all else fails, Dixie has both the RWS and CCI caps and will ship UPS anywhere in the country.

Dixie will not ship musket caps anymore. Dont know why, but they will still ship #10 and 11 caps.:barf:

Contact Log Cabin Shop in Lodi, Ohio or Track of the Wolf for musket caps.

You need musket caps. Period. There is no adequate substitute and the best place is any civil war re-enactment. For purchase. Dixie won't ship them. I tried. I finally bought a cOuple hundred at a nearby re-enactment.
