I love my 1862 now. But not at first. It suffered from terminal cap jams. When I learned about putting a cap rake on it the cap problem was cured.

On my 1858 Remington, no cap jams after shooting several cylinders. No cleaning of anything in-between either. I use small pistol primers attached with short pieces of air hose; and I use the #10 caps too. I must be one of the lucky ones because the #10's never jamed up the works after a full day of shooting. Oh and I did have to make a loading thingy to load the cylinder off the gun. The small screw holding the loading arm secure to the frame turned out no bueno. Too small a screw to hold such pressure on the loading arm. I removed the loading arm to use the ram and other parts for my loading thingy and secured the cylinder pin with a piece from Howell Arms. A piece with a spring and held in with the screw-a new one I had to get-that held the loading arm. And, I took off the catch holder for the loading arm and filed the bottom of the barrel smooth. Now my gun looks like a

One member recently posted pictures of a taller front sight he "stuck on" to get it to shoot closer to point of aim. I re-cut the hammer V.
This returns us to the powder charge, 15 to 20 gr. are what I mess with behind conical and round balls.
Have fun !!

I've had an 1862 for decades and never got around to firing it. I want to remove the nipples first and lubricate them before firing to prevent them seizing. The problem is, I've bought a half a dozen nipple wrenches and can't find one that fits. Can someone steer me to one that works on this little pistol. The pistol was made by uberti and imported by EMF. I made the box and found a copy of the original label online. 1862.JPG

Pick one and grind or file the outside, the only dimension differ is the out side clearance in the cylinder. I had to do it.

It's a good thing to put some lube or wax on the nipple threads, but the main thing is to not over-torque them. Just like spark plugs, you want snug, but not tight. GENTLE They should never seize, when they do it's usually people thinking they need to get them really tight. And of course, no lube, in really tight, left in for years, put away dirty...then you'll really see seize!
