I have a friend who I am getting estimates on his gun collection. One of his firearms is an original 1864 Colt 12 ga. SxS shotgun. It has a four digit serial number, nickel scrolling down the barrel, and is a hammerless model. It is estimated to be in 80-85% condition but I can't find a blue book price for it. My bluebook only goes to the late 1890's for shotguns. Any help would be much appreciated. I figured this piece is worth quite a bit.

If this shotgun is a side-by-side, hammerless, and made by Colt, it's a model 1883 - not 1864. Your friend may be looking at a patent date rather then the model

These were made between 1883 through 1895, with some 7,366 being made. Serial numbers run to 8,366 but there are gaps.

With this information you should be able to find a value in your Blue Book. :)
