Hello all,

Thought I'd join seeing as many of my searchs and questions on Uberti Yellowboy's led me here. Although some post were quite old they were informative and more so.

I bought a used 1866 made in 2001, 24" Barrel 45 Colt, imported by Taylor I beleive. I liked the slighty older style w/ the ladder rear sight. Already have the buck's on my model 94 Win. And dont care all to much for them. I do OK, just personal preference.

It's been used but not beat up, which is fine for me, I avoided the little more expensive by buying new and such as I will be using it, I wont worry about every little scratch.

Barrel wasnt cleaned, and figured w/ that I better look inside too.
So I took it apart right off, and much of it fell apart,
then comes the put it back so it works again fun!

After some trials and process of learning how to hold it together during assembly I got her, weather was so rainy out I didnt get the chance to shoot it. Maybe soon.
So Thanks High Road 1866 Owners for all the info!

John

I have one in .38 special, it's a hoot. Nice choice! This place is has wealth of info.

Hey again,

Shot that Yellowboy today, Wow was that alot of fun, cant get over how there's no real kick but I understand it's more like a handgun round.

Missed my first shot at 75 yards (shooting an old warped 11" frying pan) but got the next 3 in a row, moved out to 90 and was still hitting, then to 100 and hit the first 2 shots!
Very neat rifle, I'm extremely impressed and happy being I know I'm no great shot.

Guess I better get into to reloads cause I see they are going to go fast, any suggestions?

Howdy

Ain't it fun how the links will fall right out of the gun? Do yourself a favor and mark them very lightly and inconspicuously something like LF for left front and RF for right front. Makes it easier next time.

You don't want to be shooting any of the Buffalo Bore or any other hot 45 Colt ammo with the brass frame. It will be fine if you stick with any off the shelf 45 Colt SAMMI Spec ammo. But all 45 Colt ammo is expensive.

My favorite 45 Colt load is 2.2CC of FFg under a 250 grain Big Lube bullet lubricated with SPG. Or 7.5 grains of Unique under a 250 grain bullet if you want to go with that new stuff.

I use 6.4 grains of Winchester 231 under a 250 lead flatnose in my Uberti rifles.
Good stuff, rifles and load.

Thanks for the tip's, the what you use on loads is still kinda chinese to me, havent gotten that far yet.

All I bough t were cowboy loads box of Magtec 250 grain.
and a smaller box of Hornady cowboy load 255 grain, both boxes were flat nose.

If I had to buy ammo for hunting, say if I wanted to drop a deer w/ it next year, what would still be w/in the tolerances? Granted I dont have any area's were deer go overhere where it would be a long shot, maybe 50 60 yards max, Likely much closer.

Thanks Driftwood and Onmilo

I have the same rifle but don't hunt with it. At 50-60 yards or closer, your cowboy loads would do it. If you do yours with shot placement. I assume at that range, your woods hunting whitetails?

Yep Coyote3855,

I do have longer shots over here, but there is no real reason. They dont move the open wooded areas too much in the day, they stay were it's bit thicker and more quiet.

I probably wont even do the hunting, In fact I never have, Ive let a bud and his son up here. Just would like to know that if I did or if they wanted to use the rifle that it would get the job done. This last season the Bud's kid (21 yrs old) got his and the shot was
36 yards, it just came right in and across.

Thanks all for the info.

A Cimarron 1866 .44Spl is on my short list!

There's certainly nothing wrong with trying to take deer with the .45Colt. Virtually any good cast bullet load will do. I've been itching to take a few with my 1873 Deluxe Sporting Rifle .38WCF but ended up doing all my hunting with the muzzleloader again this year. Although I'm going loaded with a 180gr Gold Dot at 1470fps.
