A few years ago, I bought a much-vaunted Springfield 1911 Loaded-model. Beautiful gun, but it came out jamming. Different ammo, different mags, etc. - it still ran like crap.

SA said I that I needed to "break it it" w/ 200 rounds. To me, that is unacceptable, so I traded it in for a Sig P-220, which performed like a champ right out of the box. Coincidently, so did my Glock 21 which has been my go-to gun for 15 years.

I got the green light from "the boss" to add another pistol to the collection and I'm thinking of giving 1911 another chance. Either that or an HK45 (not USP, can't stand the trigger).

Anyhoo, has anyone bought a "reasonable" 1911 (under $1,000) that performed very well out of the box? If so, what was it?

Thanks!

Colt, Springfield, Dan Wesson, Kimber. All can make a lemon, but these are good guns and should perform "out of the box" for $1000 or less.

When you get a good one, you will just want more. be carefull. ;)

SA would have made it right if you had pushed the issue. :)

If you are looking at a polymer options, make sure you look at the XD is a wounderful pistol, I have the XD-45acp Tactical (5 inch barrel) and it is great the trigger is almost as good as the SIG P-220, I have well over a thousand rounds with all sorts of ammo, moastly cheap stuff too, and I have not had one jam of any type.

I bought a Loaded today. Fired 100rds flawlessly out of the box. Guess I'm lucky. However I like the Colt Gold Cup better. If you want a great pistol buy it right the first time...Save and pay the difference. Buy a Colt Gold Cup. You will not regret it.

Thought I had...but when I went back and looked I spent a little over a 1000 (like $1,018) on my Kimber Classic Gold Match in 2000. Can't say I've never had a problem...but I love it.

P.S. +1 on the SIG 220, thats the next Auto on my list.

I bought a Rock Island Armory 1911 ($360) that has ~75 rounds of 45 through it without any problems, plus another 100 rounds of .22 in a converter.

You can get a sig stainless 1911 for well under 750. Runs like a champ but Ive never shot hollowpoints through it.

I was worried about the supposed "break in period" on my brand spanking new Kimber Custom II, but it ran flawlessly through the first 200 rounds.

I even ran some hydra shoks through it with no problem.

I have a Kimber Series I and I love it. My brother-inlaw bought a Taurus
PT1911 and we shot it quite a bit straight out of the box no problems

+1 with Lucas; I think you'd like the Smith.
I also have never had a bad experience with a SA gun (6x, I think), so second chance yes, I think.

Cheers, TF

I was actually in the local store 3 weeks ago to buy a Taurus PT1911. This looks to be a great gun for the money to be sure. Then I saw a Springfield GI LNIB for less than $400 OTD so it went home with me (300 flawless rounds so far). I gave the Taurus a hard look and lots of research and I will buy one...

All of my 1911s have been well under $1k, and all have been fine out of the box. But everone makes a lemon from time to time.
I'd get used to the notion of a break-in period for any automatic, it seems to be the industry trend.

My $390 Rock Island Armory 1911 has ate thousands of rounds of ammo without any more of a problem than a weak recoil spring which I remedied with a new Wolff spring. I only use Chip McCormick mags which do make a difference. The included Novak mag worked well but cheaper no-name mags are sort of hit or miss.

I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Colt models O1970 and O1091

so if they say to put 200 rounds through 45 ammo (which is now very expensive), is that on their dime? :p
I thought they're supposed to test this stuff before leaving the door.

Taurus PT1911 , no a hiccup right out of the box , sights are dead on at 25 years

Well, in which direction? If the hindsights are well adjusted, well, that's nothing to brag about. But if you've got your foresights that well adjusted, well, my hat's off. What and where did you shoot, so we can know when to duck in 2033? ;)

yeah, my dad bought a new para .45. put 100 rounds of range ammo (reloaded, we think not enough grain) and it jammed every couple of shoots. my dad said that after another 100 we'll be good.
