I have a Rock Island frame assembly with an Essex slide, match barrel, Wilson match bushing, and a Wilson extractor, chambered for 9mm. It's a great shooter, but I suddenly experienced extraction problems at the shooting range on Sunday/1-27. Incidentally, I NEVER close the slide with a round in the chamber, I know better.
When I returned home and checked the extractor tension, it wouldn't hold a factory round in place, in other words the extractor tension was very loose. I had the extractor adjusted by a professional smithy when the barrel and bushing were fitted only about 2 months ago and I have only fired about 300 rounds since it was returned. I adjusted the tension (like I do on my 1911 45's until there was sufficient tension to hold a factory round in place securely no matter what position the slide was held in.
My question is, there is an (expensive) extractor in the Brownell's catalog that has a coil spring configuration. Would this item hold tension more consistently than a standard extractor? Is there a certain series 70 extractor that works better than most?
1911 Tuner, if anyone knows, you do.
