I am looking into buying a 1911 .45 acp. I have owned a Springfield GI 45 in the past and liked it very well but sold it due to a job loss and the need for cash.:banghead: I would like to replace it now but want to know what is out there for under $400 and even closer to $300. I have looked at the RIA 1911 and am leaning toward it unless someone can convince me otherwise. Thanks.

I'll second the Norinco, my freind has one and it has never missed a beat. Maybe you could find one used on Gunbroker.

First, welcome to THR.

I picked up a slightly used, and slighly modified (upgraded sights, extended thumb safety, commander style hammer) Springfield GI for right at $400 a few months ago, and I've really enjoyed it. The SA guns are built pretty stout, and used as a base for customization by many top 1911 gunsmiths including Ted Yost, and I believe Jim Garthwaite as well.

Closer to $300 I'd look at the RIA. Their US rep, Ivan, posts here and at the 1911 forums under user name ArmscorBA, and has been very helpful to folks in the threads I've read about RIA/Armscor pistols. I think that kind of customer service goes a long way to adding value to a product. There are many good reviews of the RIAs here and on the 1911 forums.

Going back to the $400 price range you might look at Taurus' new line of 1911s as well. Take a look thru the threads here in the Autoloaders sub forum. There have been several on Taurus PT 1911 in past few weeks, and the reviews are good.

Thanks...

...for the input and the warm welcome. I think that I will get the Rock Island unless I can find a great deal on a Springfield. I think this forum will be a very valuable tool for me and I'm glad that I found it.

For 300 the RIA would be a good choice, So would Auto Ordanance, but i were going to buy a new low end 1911 I would look at the taurus 1911 as it comes with alot of Bells and whistles for not ***** alot more. I saw some at a local Gun show this past weekend and they were in the low four range and have alot of "custom" work on them. Look around and you may be able to find a great deal on a good used SA milspec or GI model in the300-350 range. I have seen them recently on some of these forums and guys just need to move them for Christmas cash. Good luck on your quest!

I am learning to really like the RIAs. Current production has improved and seem well made & constructed and more to the point....a very good deal! :D

I would definitely go with a RIA. It comes with a lifetime warranty and it goes bang everytime you pull the trigger, no fte's and no ftf's. Customer service is also A-1!!! I have the Taurus 1911 as well, but I prefer the cheaper RIA. All it needs is a beavertail safety grip and you're good to go.

Well, if you can find a Norinco, get it. It is made of superior steel (5100) and runs like the dickens. I also have a PT 1911 and it is every bit as functional as one of my more costly pistols. Look in the used racks, there are plenty of nice used 1911's out there. I have had a bad experience with two different brands of phillipino pistols, Charles Daley and RIA. Look for a used springer if you can. Just my personal experience FWIW.
