I am seriously considering one of these after seeing that they are reasonably priced, even new, and I can switch the barrel to 9mm pretty easy. I had thought about a 9mm 1911, but I think I would really enjoy a real Colt 38 Super (buddy has two 1911 Colt 45's) because I could have two guns in one. How is the quality on the newer Colt 5 inch 38 Supers? I'm looking at just a basic stainless steel Govt 80 Series like my buddy's 45. The prices on the Colts are running it looks like about $750...and it is a Colt! It is nice that, from what I'm reading, I can just switch mags, barrel, maybe recoil spring, and use 9mm ammo (when I need to use it if say someone has a bunch). The 38 Super looks like a fun cartridge and even my buddy claims he had looked into buying one a couple yrs ago when he picked up his 45. How is the quality and reliability of the Colt 1911 in 38 Super? I'm going to use it mainly for range, house gun, fun, walking in the woods, backup for deer hunting (in TN we can carry handguns that have 4 inch barrels when deer hunting and use it on a deer). I carry a snub for carry...so this purchase won't be a concealed gun.

I just need to sell my Glock 19 to get the ball rolling on this project because I think it will be fun!

If you reload it's a great choice, super ammo is not the easiest to find and expensive when you do. I love mine, it's had a little work done to it by Clarks, shoots great, low recoil and hotter than 9mm. I'm not 100% sure but you might have to swap the ejector too if you go to 9mm.

I like my Series 80 .38 Super. I plan to get a 9MM barrel for it one of these days.
