1911 fans, tell me why?

Shall I forward him all the PM's we sent back and forth? Ya need to make a FAQ out of it and make it "stickey" IMHO... :p

Both the 1911 and the Glock are good designs. Which one is "best" depends on the person. For my opinion however .........

The 1911 fit's my hand better, has a longer sight radius and a longer barrel (full sized gun), a better trigger, a smoother trigger motion (straight back) and I like the manual safety. The added weight makes it easier to shoot. If you look at people who compete in the various pistol competitions, you'll see the same seems to go for most of the population.

The reasons for the Glock's popularity, IMHO, is a combination of several factors:
- Seeing a uniformed officer openly carrying a cocked & locked auto causes coniptions to much of the non-gun owning public. (so 1911s were never much of an option)
- The trigger of a Glock is at least as good as any compeating double action auto.
- The Glock was the first "lightweight" polymer handgun. A great boon to officers who carried the gun far more than they shot it.
- The Glocks shorter (4.somthing inch) barrel is more comfortable than a 5 inch barrel when seated in a squad car.
- Glocks mechanism was one of the first commercialy successful actions that allowed a semi auto pistol to be carried so that it would fire at the pull of the trigger (no manual safety) without an exposed hammer and with a trigger pull under 7 lbs.
- The Glocks "manual of arms" is simple and easily taught to police recruits who may not be gun enthusiasts and who also have many other things to try and learn during training.
- Because of these, police departments loved them. And the public largely looks at what police use to determine what to buy.

By the way, I've owned 3 1911's. A Springfield mil spec, a Para P-14 and a Kimber Compact. The Springfield was utterly reliable untill I wore it out (10,000 + rounds on a single set of springs will do that). The other two have been and still are utterly reliable. I've shot a number of Glocks, in 9mm, .357 SIG, .40 and .45, yet have never been impressed enough to plunk down money on any of them.

"Colts and Kimbers are what you show to your friends, but glocks are what you show to your enemies"

That's because people who carry 1911's don't have enemies. At least not long term ........

My my three Kimbers were lemons, but that did not shake my faith in my Colt Government Model nor my Les Baer; it simply taught me never to waste more money on Kimbers. Why blame the design when it is the maker who is at fault?

The 1911 is also the slimmest and most customizeable platform for the 45acp. The GLock 21 is WAY thicker and blockier. The grip is much larger and the 1911 grip can be changed with a simple set of grips to suit your tastes. FOr concealed carry the 1911 is superior hands down. Slimmer weapon, slimmer mags, and options for sights, holsters, etc..... are even more plentiful than the GLocks. I have meaty hands and short fingers. I can't even dream of reaching the mag release on a 21 with my thumb. The 1911 is one of the few weapons that I can reach the mag release. I also own two M&Ps. THey give me a real appreciation of how terrible the Glock's ergos are. They have never fit my hand well. The 1911 however fits and points like a glove.

And Quaamik, the GLock was far from the first lightweight polymer gun. (was there a heavyweight?) but it was the first that was widely accepted by law enforcement. Glockers love to claim the ingenuity of the Glocks and while they are an innovative weapon they did borrow heavily from past technologies. The striker, trigger safety, polymer design, etc... all thee had been done long before the GLocks came around.

Well For Me I Have Owned And Still Do, A Glock 22, 19, 23, 21, 27. . . Colt Combat Commander, Mp .40, Beretta 92, 96. , Sig229, Springfield 1911 A-1.

Out Of All Them The Glocks Have Never Failed With Me, Mp Had Problems, Berettas Ok., Sig Was Sweet, Colt Is The Best Gun I Have Ever Owned, Springfield Failed Almost Every Time A Round Would Attempt To Chamber, This Was Fixed With A < Pound Recoil Spring And Polish Of The Feed Ramp. The Point I Am Getting At Is You Need To Decide Exactly What You Dont Like About Your 1911, If It Is The Feeding Problems That Can Be Fixed For 30.00 Or The Weight Of The Gun. But Look At The Bright Side If You Cant Fix The Problem In The Dark Alley With 8 Rounds You Can Always Throw The Gun At Them To Knock Them Out.

Accuracy Power Speed

That was the motto of the late Jeff Cooper. I'm still working on the speed part, but the 1911 platform allows me to hit what I want to hit in a powerful caliber. It works for me. YMMV of course, and if it does you should go find something that you can use well.

Why do we have to keep beating ourselves like this? :banghead: :D

I don't own a Glock or like the trigger or the ergonomics or the feeling of a Glock when fired.

I have a Norinco, my first 1911 that runs like a champ. I have around $300 in it. It was purchased new and some Chip McCormick parts were added to it.

I have two pre-series II Kimbers. Both run like champs and are bone stock. Kimber's quality has definitely dropped and I would not recommend them.

In my hands they are all more accurate than a Glock.

Are Glocks reliable? Yes. Are 1911's reliable? From certain manufacturers I believe they are.

Let the beatings proceed.........

1. A good 1911 is stone reliable. Period. If yours isn't, your gun has a problem.

2. "1911s" have wildly varying reliability/accuracy/quality/cost because the gun is made by about a bazillion different companies in about a bazillion different configurations. A Glock 17 is made by one company, Glock, and in one configuration, 17. Comparing 1911s in general to one model of Glock in particular is like comparing "european cars" to my Dodge Charger. Which european car? The Yugo? The Ferrari?

The only thing that the 1911 gives up to more modern pistols is capacity and, perhaps, weight. Trigger and ergonomics are, to most people, markedly better in the 1911.

Of course, it's a personal choice. If you prefer a glock, shoot a glock.

Problem solved.

also, in some states, 8 - 9 rounds are 'bout max, anyway. IMHO if you have time to launch all of that lead, probably SD/HD is not likely to be supported by law..

The 2nd best thing about not being hit by a BG ..... run - throw stuff into another area. Make *1* shot count.. And then repeat it. NEVER give the BG a shot at you. .

It's not kid stuff here.

None of my 1911s jam. I've had a ball shooting them in USPSA. I load up a huge bag of mags and empty them all at the range. Never a jam.

Then again, I don't own any Kimbers.

I'd get a Glock, but they're fat. :p

Ah, yes... the famous, never-ending 1911 vs. Glock debate.

Umm, a question though. You compare 7 rounds vs. 13. Yes, it's true that a single-stack 1911 doesn't hold as much ammo as a Glock, but who loads their 1911 with just 7 rounds anyway? Are you in the military? I don't know anybody who doesn't load 8 rounds into a quality mag like a Wilson, and keep another one in the pipe. 9 vs. 14 rounds is more like it. Still in Glock's favor, but while 14 is ample 9 is still plenty. I'll take the slimmer grip that I can actually hold well so I can shoot straighter.

And by the way, if your 1911 misfeeds and stovepipes all the time, it's time to ship it back to the factory for repair. Don't act like everbody else's 1911's do it as well, because they don't.

Ford vs Chevy. Coke vs Pepsi. Canon vs Nikon.

Its all a matter of preference.

They're both quality handgun designs. Some prefer one and others prefer another.

Neither is "better" than the other.

Personally I think the 1911 is the dead sexiest looking pistol in existance, fits in my hand perfectly, is balanced perfectly (in Commander length), and has the best trigger action of any pistol I've ever used.

Personally, I can't stand the trigger action of a Glock, nor the grip angle, nor the width of the grip, nor the lack of an external hammer and safety. They also look absolutely horrendous.

Again, we're talking about preferences here, and not any judgment on the quality or effectiveness of either pistol.

I've used the dead horse icon before. I believe attempting to revive a dead horse may be more appropriate for this thread. I have no idea what the little guy behind the horse is doing after he whips it.
