Question for the knowledge base here...

Were the original grip designs on the 1911 pistol such that the left panel
extended past the plunger tube to provide an added measure of support
in the event of the tube letting loose ?

I have seen aftermarket grips that both extend past and do not extend
past the tube and wondering if it is even an issue.

Thanks all.....

I know Gunner grips from simonich knives do. I believe there are many others that do this as well. A quick look should tell you if the left grip panel has a bump up or a recess machined into it to support the tube.

I think that most full-size Govt. grips would cover the plunger tube as per the original design.

Unless you are using slimmed-down grips, you should always use grips that protect the plunger tube from getting damaged/knocked loose.

This is critical in making sure that the thumb safety will operate correctly.

One of the best...

...lines I've read about having grips that cover the plunger tube came from S.Camp (hipowersandhandguns.com): it's like wearing suspenders and a belt!
