I'm pretty comfortable with cocked and locked carry. I figure I've got a thumb safety, a grip safety and a drop safety protecting me. Most accident discharges are from pulling the darned trigger! Put the weapon in your holster, then keep your hands off the gun!
On the other hand, my dad was a 1911 fanatic. He easily fired 100,000 rounds in practice and competition. (Probably way more than that.) He always carried his magazine loaded with ball ammo and the chamber empty. Chamber empty means the gun is drop proof and very safe for administrative handling. If you are not a soldier, cop, drug dealer/user/buyer then your threat level is probably low enough that you will never EVER draw the gun in anger. My dad lived his entire life and died at age 72 without once taking any gun out if a holster in public.
If you feel comfortable carrying chamber empty, I say go for it.
