THR,

I have a few 1911s with blended magwells and really like the function and the feel of this addition. For a majority of my 1911s, the blenidng was done in conjunction with some other work to include refinishing (Hardchroming).

With my latest 1911, I would like to install only a S&A Magwell with the arched MSH. Since there is no other smithing or refinishing I would like to have done to this pistol, I would like to blend the magwell myself.

What type of file would I need to blend the inside edges of the magwell to match the angle of the bevel on the frame? I understand that I will be exposing the metal on the drop-in magwell, so which spray/bake-on coating should I use to match the finish on the Springfield Operator?

Any other tips would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

I used a .25" round for the corners and an air powered .75" wide flat for the flats. Afterward I blended everything and ploshed it with a large felt bob and a 10" soft wheel. You can probably skip most of the polishing since the hardchromer will probably brush or bead blast the arewa for you, just get rid of all the file marks.

You should be careful around the sides, as its possible to go too far. Keep removing the well and checking how close you are to the edges.
