A freind of mine has a new Springfield 1911 (the GI replica model), and he's having some issues with it. Once every mag or two, a fired case will extract but stay wedged under the extractor and fail to eject out of the slide. The cases are stuck tighly enough that we can't pry them out; to fix it we have to drop the mag and rack the slide - pulling the slide back open will eject the case. Any idea what's causing this and how to fix it? My though was that the extractor might have rotated around a bit, but it doesn't look like that's happened.

I'm no 1911 smith but could it be that the ejector is not impacting the case soon enough or with enough force? I know some 1911 parts manufacturers sell extended ejectors.

Calling 1911 Tuner!! Any ideas?

Possible/Probable causes:

Short cycle...Not highly likely since the GI Springfield's OEM recoil spring is
about 13 pounds. Could be a tight slide impeding free recoil. When the parkerizing gets worn off the rails, it'll smooth up quite a bit. Lots of CLP
Breakfree and 500 hand-cycles...recoil system and barrel out of the slide...
will do a pretty good job. CLP/J&B slurry will do it better and faster.

Extractor hook too deep and not releasing the case. Sharp corner on the bottom of the hook doing the same thing. Measure the hook tip depth. More than about .035 inch can cause release problems. Put a light radius on the bottom corner of the hook so the case can twist free easier when it hits the ejector. This one's most often seen with extended ejectors, but can show up with standard ejectors under the right circumstances...such as:

Ejector mislocated...either too far to the rear or too far inboard.

Excessive extractor tension/Extractor hook located too close to the breechface centerline. Usually causes failures to go to battery too, but not always.

Case releasing too low, with the case striking the lower edge of the ejection port before it can get loose from the extractor. Since the gun is a GI clone,
with the high port...this one's probably gonna be your bug. The problem can usually be corrected by radiusing the bottom corner of the hook, but sometimes a new ejector is the only cure. I used an Ed Brown extended ejector, shortened a little, to correct the ejection issues on mine.

Case rim diameter too large. Usually happens with brass that's been reloaded a few too many times. The rim grows a little with each load/shoot cycle.
Measure the rim diameter on the next case that hangs up. It shouldn't be more than .480 inch for best function, and .475 is better.

i had the exact same problem with my GI, but mine did it on every other round. i replaced the extractor with a wilson bullet proof model and put in a wolff 18.5 recoil spring. went out the other day and put 200 trouble free rounds through it. my assumption is the extractor was all out of whack, but it had worked fine up until the point where it started jamming. after it started jamming up, it wouldn't stop. i played with the tension, but couldn't get it tuned to be 100% reliable.

the only way to clear my jam was to drop the mag, rechamber the round and it would eject out fine after that, but mine's a duty gun and i can't afford to live with that kind of problem. i'd at least suggest the wilson extractor. it needed no adjustments whatsoever. i installed it and it worked perfectly.

Our GI did the exact same thing after we got it. The gun just needed to be broken in. We thought extractor tension was off, but after troubleshooting, it was correct. We just shot it several more sessions at the range to see if this was a break-in issue or if was something needing repair. It was just break in.

My next suspicion was the extractor hook being too deep. I thought it would need a little fine tuning, but it's been fine.

Anyway, run through that list Tuner posted.
