I,m an IWB guy but want to buy my first owb commander concealment holster.
I carry at the 3:00-3:30 position and due to build will require in the area of 20% cant to hide the grip.Looking to by once cry once.
looking for recomendations. thanks.

I would think it would be difficult to draw from a 20+ degree cant holster at 3:00. Typically, holsters with that degree of cant are worn further back. In any case, the big cant OWB holsters that come to mind are the…

Galco Concealable http://www.galcogunleather.com/concealable-belt-holster_8_4_1064.html

DM Bullard Bodyguard http://store.dmbullardleather.com/catalog/category/5060218

Both exceed 15 degrees, which is normal for FBI (forward body incline) cant which is usually recommended for the 3:30 - 4:00 range.

For reference, see where forum member tmoore912 wears his IWB Milt Sparks Summer Special II and Versa Max II, in this thread at post #29, both of which have 15 degrees of cant.

I just swithched my CC OWB holster to an Allessi CQC-S. (my previous OWB pancake required unlacing my belt, and annoyed me.)

I've been wearing it for about a month down here in FL, and it's been great. Super comfortable, easy on, but still secure, and draws well. I would reccomend it.

FWIW, It's carrying a Dan Wesson Guardian, so CDR sized 1911 with no problem.

FWIW (again) after years of IWB carry, I switched to OWB CC this summer, and will never be going back. SO MUCH more comfortable.

Interestingly, I was thinking about Alessi when the OP asked for 20+ degrees for 3:00 - 3:30 carry.

You can go to Alessi's site and see what cant and what position they recommend for that cant.

For instance, the DOJ is a straight drop holster designed for 3:00ish wear. http://www.alessigunholsters.com/alessi-holsters-doj-standard-holster-for-colt-guns/

"This holster was designed to be worn on the hip."

The CQC-S is a shallow cant holster, more like 10 degrees http://www.alessigunholsters.com/alessi-holsters-cqc-s-holster-for-colt-guns/

"The CQC/S holster is made with a slight forward cant. This holster is designed to be worn just behind your hip but in front of your rear pocket."

The Belt Slide is a 15 degree cant holster designed for further back carry. http://www.alessigunholsters.com/alessi-holsters-belt-slide-holster-for-colt-guns/

Yeah I kinda ignored his cant requirement because 1.It's a gun board and ignoring the OP is kinda normal. and 2. the CQC-2 is designed for where he said he wears it. I'm a lefty, but I wear mine at 8:00-8:30. (i.e. just behind the left hip, with the back of the barrel just forward of the outside seem of the rear pocket on jeans.) It conceals fine, and draws well.

ETA: FWIW iblong, I think you're overestimating the cant you need to hide the grip, and would not like using that steep of a holster in that position. INstead of canting the butt so far forward, look for holsters that pull it in close to the body rotationally (when viewed from the top)

I have a commander length 1911 and really like the Avenger from Clark Fork leather. Having one belt loop on the back of the holster takes up less room on your belt and allows you to move the gun around without skipping a belt loop. Holster is really well made and only 60 bucks shipped. Nice folks to deal with...

Thanks for the replies, the reasoning for the cant is my tt.gunleather Iwb holsters are about 20% and are just about perfect for me at 3=4:00.
As I've said this will be my first owb.Im trying not to add to the box of unused holsters.

I'm not that familiar with TT Gunleather's line-up, but I suspect they make an OWB match (ride height and cant) for whatever IWB holster you have. That may be the place to start.

Conversely, I've avoided the Avenger style holsters in favor of pancakes since I've been concerned with limited holster placement options due to the wide loop at the back of the holster. I like to straddle a belt loop and without moving belt loops on my pants, the pancake design gives me more placement options than Avenger style holsters.

TT Gunleather does make a OWB holster to complement your IWB one.

Give Tim a call and leave a message. He'll call you back when he takes a break from working on the leather. He can listen to your concerns and offer which options he thinks will work best for you

Budget & choices....

How much do you want to spend?
Can you wait for a custom holster or do you want it right away?
Do you want leather? Kydex? Polymer?
You have a # of decent brands for a Commander size right hand belt holster.

I think I'll take that advice,Tim is a good guy and I have been very happy with the 4 iwb holsters I have bought from him.

My old Bianchi Askins Avenger has carried my Combat Commander quite nicely for a lot of years now.

Commander Holster

Maybe try Ray Cory doing business at LOBO GUN LEATHER. He's been in the holster making business for some time --leather only---one man shop.
I have 2 holsters I purchased from him for 2 Sigs I own , they've served me well .
