I have a 5" Kimber and am looking for another that I can conceal more easily but I am getting confused with which products fit my needs. I want a 4" barrel with the shorter grip (officer's sized grip? I get confused with all the different names).
I am changing to a new job where I will be in and out of the car most of the day and the 4" barrell will be perfect and the shorter grip will reduce printing through my jacket. I found the perfect gun but it is a limited run and I don't have the cash for it right now but want to know what to keep an eye out for. The one I saw was a Kimber Covert in stainless steel.

any help would be appreciated,

Just remember that the 1911 was designed around certain specifications with a 5 inch barrel being one of them.

I am not a huge Kimber fan but they and Colt seem to have done the best as far as shorter 1911s and reliability go...custom and semi custom guns aside.

Now take this advice for what it is worth, absoutely nothing as I am just some idiot behind a keyboard. Now 1911 Tuner can probably give you a real answer.

Kimber has so many models I can't keep up with them either.

The Kimber "Pro" guns are the long grip.

The Compact Custom is the 4 inch barrel with short grip.

The "Ultra" guns are the 3 inch barrel with the short grip.

I use the Compact Custom, with laser grip, as a house gun.
All steel and 4 inch barrel.

I've got 3 "Ultras" and use the Tactical Ultra as a carry gun.

You're on the right track, at least. It is always the grip of the gun that is the hardest to conceal; not the barrel length.

I have a Kimber Ultra Elite (I say, Biff, they're now called the Ultra CDP for the common folk); 3" barrel, Officer's length frame/grip, super pistol; could only like it more if I had gotten the 4" barrel (although I can't say for sure why, just that it looks more balanced overall as a pistol), and I carry it in a Milt Sparks Versa-Max II holster with their gun belt.

Thanks for the help everyone, Colt CCO and Kimber Custom Carry would be the two I'm looking for then. Now to work up the money for one.

You might look at the Springfield Micro Compact 1911A1. I've posted a pic below, we stock them and they run 414.83.

Just remember this little piece of advice! When choosing a 1911 with a
barrel shorter than the standard 5" models, malfunctions are
more likely to occur. I don't care what manufactuer you choose,
its a common problem; and one that you should address before you
dart out of the house with one of these strapped on as a CCW piece.

I highly recommend the Kimber compact CDP. I have not had any problems with it. I have been lucky as of late because I also have a Ultra Tactical that has yet to malfunction. I have about decided that I don't care for a 1911 with a 3" barrel but it has been 100% with about 400 -500 rounds.
OOps I take it back about the compact. I remember I did have some problems using the Kimber mag but it has also been 100% using Wilson mags.
The Kimber compact CDP is one of my favorite pistols .

general wisdom seems to be that if you go shorter than the 4" barrel models you are more likely to hve problems, but the 4",4 1/4"ers tend to not have these problems. Of course its all a crap shoot with any of them.

I have an SA Lightweight Compact that has been 100% for me and the lighter weight definitely makes a difference carting around all day. They have discontinued this model but i'm sure you could probably find one if you checked around.
