YEah, I would suggest getting the Ruger SR 1911 full size. The COmmander version isnt bad , too. Dont spend too much unless money is not a problem. Remember the ammo nowadays are getting way expensive and hard to come by.

I have a stainless Remington and the only complaint I had was that the hammer/sear/safety combo isn't to spec. I replaced my hammer and sear, fitted the safety, and now can't go back to the original... but I'm good with that.

I voted RIA. My first 1911, just recently got in fact, was the RIA GI model. Loving it so far. However!!!
First thing, I think you're being charged too much on the RIA. Last gunshow I went too here in DFW they were still in the $475 range for the no frills model. The Remington runs around $625 from honest dealers, a little more for the stainless.

The RIA GI used to run for a little under $400 here. I paid $415 for mine. I don't know a thing about the pricing on Remingtons, but sounds like either they're gouging on the RIA....OR offering the Remington for a steal?

If it's the former, you might want to look elsewhere for a RIA. If it's the latter, you may just want to grab the Remington? ;)

My interaction with RIA directly was about a 1911 9mm mid length that had extraction problems. All I can say is the customer service was excellent. I will not hesitate to buy another used RIA knowing that the company backs their product (even if you are not the original owner). I have two 1911's by RIA and I like them both.

Normally, I'd agree with a suggestion to buy Ruger products, but my experience has been quite hit-and-miss with the SR1911. I will add, I have and do own Ruger products. I'm a fan.

This is the only Ruger product I don't recommend personally.

$649 NIB Spartan, if you go in that direction

I always though STI's products were great (from what I heard, not 1st hand). This vendor buys big lots of NIB guns and sells them reasonably. I passed on an EAA Witness steel framed 40S&W for $289 in 2011, and until 12/2012 (I didn't have the cash) he had S&W I-Bolts, with iron sights mounted by Williams Gun Sight for $299.

He has good prices if you like what he has.

I hear lots if good things about RIA on this sight. I'd consider the Taurus 1911 too. I had a Llama 45 that I didn't like because the parts weren't interchangeable and the hammer bit in to my hand in a big way.

I would also assume the RIA 1911 would be $200 cheaper than the Remington. You might buy the RIA and, if you like the platform, invest $800-1,000 down the line in a better version. My $0.02

While I don't put much stock in magazine write ups the June issue of American Rifleman gave the Remington R1 Pistols a pretty good review. They shot the R1 Standard, the R1 Talo and the R1 Carry and included the ammunition used and the group sizes. The guns delivered well at 25 yards from a Ransom Rest. Anyway, for those with the magazine the review may be worth a read if you are considering a Remington 1911.

While I focus on the older Series 70 Colt Government models I have been thinking about adding a Remington or Kimber to the lot. Can't comment on the RIA as I have yet to shoot one. I did shoot a Remington R1 Standard at the range that belongs to a friend and liked it.

I voted R1 mostly because I have recently fallen in love with the Remington 1911 R1 Carry. Beautiful gun, love the style and love the grips and the slide serrations. And it says Remington on it. Kinda stupid reasons to pick a gun but works for me. That is, until I saw the price!

Thanks lots for the opinions guys, I just ended up getting both...

Got a great deal so Why not, I'm not one to sell out of My Collection so resale is not too big a deal.

I have a 1911 in a .357Mag (coonan) and a .45 PX4, but I've been wanting a 1911, I got the RIA and the Remy for me and I'm buying My nephew a SA 1911 for his Birthday!

I'll see if I can do a side by side by side comparison of all 3 here soon, :D

Happy Shooting!!

Cynthia

The remington is nice and the sights are outstanding, but its a series 80. The series 80 adds a safety system to the trigger and some claim it takes a bit away from the 1911's trademark trigger feel. Also, if you're gonna be a 1911 purist, John Browning's creation was a series 70, the series 80 only came about when lawyers got a hold of the gun.

Also, its pretty simple to completely detail strip a series 70 slide, easy enough that you'll clean out the firing pin channel and extractor and you'll completely mint it out. A series 80 slide is quite a bit more complicated, and you might find yourself not cleaning it as thoroughly.

Me, there is NO advantage of a series 80 gun to offset the added complexity. Gimme a series 70 every time.

I voted other ..... I picked a Springfield Mil-Spec from Gander Mountain a couple of weeks ago for $700. I have a Rock Island GI model in matte nickel that shoots and looks better than the R1 .... I've had 2 parkerized RIAs .... one needed work and the Tactical model just didn't impress me after owning the matte nickel model for a while. If I were you, my choice would be a Springfield Mil-Spec or Springfield G.I. model. The MilSpec has pretty much the same features as the R1 but nicer and the G.I. is more reminiscent of the RIA but nicer IMO..... YMMV.

smalls, i did try, got a nice letter from arnell saying if it feeds 8 rounds, its good even if it doesnt go 16. Very unhappy about it.

I've had them both. I'll say RIA all the way. RIA is the only 1911 I've ever owned that functioned 100% right out of the box. The Rem, SA, Colt and especially Kimber all had to have some tweaking done before they worked like they were suppose to. Also Armscor corrects issues for free and pay shipping for you FOR LIFE if you ever have a problem not to mention when you call you actually get to talk to the guy that actually works on your gun to ensure you get the best service possible and there's usually some new free mags and other goodies when you get your gun back! NOBODY else does this! RIA all the way for any 1911 you ain't planning on dropping a a couple grand on!

I own on R1S and a RIA in 9mm. I like both of them, but if I could have only one it would be the R1S (mainly on aesthetics and IMO better sights).
