there are plenty on gunbroker.com, just search for "rock island."

and with that, i think today i will go to the gun shop and finally buy a Tactical (if i can find one!).

Overall they are good guns, but with any and all guns, you have to really check out what you bought.

I purchased a compact (Officer's) frame for a RIA in order to build one up, and found that the hole for the grip safety was off by a few thousandths. If you look at the photo you can see the Wilson beavertail just doesn't quite fit there as flush as it should. This in turn threw off everything else by the same bit, but thankfully it was all very minimal fitting and filing to get it 100% with all the Wilson parts I added in. For example, the front and rear sight cuts in the slide were off by a bit and just took some filing down to fit actual Novak's sights vs the stock sights.

So customization can be a bit of a pain, depending. The end result though it still a fine firearm.

I picked my Tactical model up at Cabela's before Christmas, they had to special order it but it was worth the wait. The store was running a special "if you purchase $400 get $100 off", so I got a pretty sweet deal. Nice pistol, really like the trigger.

Just shot ~100 rounds out of my brand-new RIA GI model today without a single failure.

Then I put a Marvel conversion unit on a ran another ~50 rounds of .22lr through it.

Well worth the $360 (shipped) I paid for it.

Ria 1911

I recently bought a standard model. It is attractive but not as well finished as the big name brands. It has a very nice trigger and shoots straight but 3" high at 50 feet. No problems with the Novak mag, actually very well built. I added a couple Chip McCormick mags that work fine too. I did have one problem shooting this week, it turned out to be cheap Blazer ammo with a case that was too long and hung up going into the chamber. The recoil seems a little sharper than my CZ97B and not quite as smooth in operation. But I like it. What is the best/easiest solution to the shooting high situation, other than aiming low?

Is is 3" high from a rest or offhand?

If it's from a rest, then your options from easiest to hardest are:
1. Say "close enough," but don't aim low...it's a bad habit.
2. Take a file to the rear sight a little at a time until it's zeroed then re-coat the bare metal
3. Get a slightly taller front sight installed
4. Get a new rear sight that's adjustable

Also, it depends where you are aiming. 3" high is dead in the 10 ring if you are holding at 6:00 on the target, which is what I do. Maybe I should get one that hits point-of-aim and we can trade.

The $64,000 question is would you RIA owners bet your life on the gun or is it a range puppy?

range puppy only.

Can't get much more than 100 rounds through it before it has a failure.

I use the failures to do clearing drills.

I carry my RIA 1911 quite often (edit--.45) . The .38 Super on occassion. I trust both of them.

C&L, nice gun. Is it a .38super? What are those grips? I have a .45acp plain ful size version, $300 in 2003,I stupidly passed on another in 2004 for $260, a store display model.

I actualy liked the stock grips and put them on a Colt. Mine works fine but I have not shot it extensively, I consider them kind of like the modern equvilant of the Norinco 1911a1 in providing the American market with an affordable decent entry level 1911 patern gun though I assume the RIA is not nearly as good of steel.

Anyone ever shot a RIA extensively, how did it hold up? I'd like to pick up the .38super version used at a bargain price if I can.

RIA 1911 Hi-Cap

Hi all, just joined the site. Since we're talking about RIA 1911's I figured I'd share. Just got my RIA 1911 today but they accidently sent me the wrong gun. I had originaly ordered the 1911 mil-spec and they sent me the A2 hi-cap. Not real pleased with how big the frame is but it's not too awful bad I guess. I love the 1911 design because of the slim frame but they said I could send it back, no problem.

It's my go-to gun, and I'm real pertikler 'bout my 1911s

I agree with the above post.... Why would anybody buy a piece of junk from the Philippines when you can pay so much more:rolleyes:
On a gun rest at 25 yrds, this junk can do quarter size groups and below is 16 rounds from 15 yrds, semi-rapid off hand. Closing in on about 4,000 rounds through it without a single hicup. Pix are before and after.

That would be a big yes. My RIA has been fool proof out of the box and even more ergonomic/reliable since the parts changes I made involved. Spring job. Hammer, Sear, Sear disconnect, slide stop, etc.
