1911 Taurus Sight Question

I have a Taurus 1911 9mm that consistently shoots low

I am looking at possibly adding an adjustable rear sight (kinda want a front fiber-optic too-

From what I understand the Taurus comes with "Heinie" sight dovetails. Are there drop in options or do i have to send the slide off to be cut?

What kind of sight recommendations do you all have?

I'll save you some money,time,and aggravation learn to shoot the Heinies...Yours is not an uncommon problem when shooting those sights...grab some sandbags and your favorite ammo and start at 5 or 7 yards. Take notes as you make adjustments to your sight picture.

The sandbags should help eliminate anticipation of shot problems while at the same time allowing you to make needed optical adjustments from a solid rest. Once you get used to them you will find them to be easy to acquire and fast shooting.

I have no problem compensating but the pistol is for rent on our range and I let family use it Ill take the aggravation of getting adjustable sights to avoid the aggravation of telling every person to shoot high

Gotcha ya.....that said you may have to call Taurus CS and ask them what cut they use on your model. As far as adjustable sights go everyone see's them differently and most people move them to a different position so when the gun gets back to me I have to adjust them again....it's one of the reasons I prefer fixed sight handguns.

How low does it shoot? Mine shoots about 1 1/2 " low. I just had to compensate. With other handguns, I always put my target on top of the front sight, but with my PT1911, I cover the target with the front sight and always end up shooting what I point at.

Its about 3" low with 115gr and about 2" low with 124gr. have not had much of a chance to run 147gr but with the few i ran my gut tells me its going to be about 1" low

yes, i usually have my impact point sitting right on top of the front sight. usually i dont keep a firearm i cant do that with but i have a funny drive about making this taurus right

Hey Cyclops...This is on the Heinie web site under whats new section....they show it on a 1911...and since they make sights for Taurus...?

Looks neat ...maybe a little big, but not for range application for sure.

I have an amendment though... Upon closer examination after removing some grime I found that the Heine sight has "Novak" stamped into it.

This opens up a whole new field of sights does it not?

I can tell you this - I've been told (not by Taurus) that my PT1911 in 9MM is constructed with sights that are to be employed more in a "combat" sight picture than a "bullseye" sight picture - meaning that the dot is to completely cover the aim point.

I'm not saying it is true or false - I have yet to get that gun back out & test this theory. I can tell you that I have always set up my guns with adjustable sights so that the aiming point rides completely above the front sight. This would be learning a new method for me, and I think would be different than some other fixed sight guns I have. My Kimber .45s come to mind immeadiately.

For me - I am considering a set of Novak adjustables for my PT1911. Not sure if they are on Novak's site yet, but I emailed them & they are available.

If it is shooting low, why not just get a shorter front sight? I had a Colt Gold Cup that shot a couple inches low of point of aim. I was gong to do an adjustable rear but got a shorter front blade and it took care of the problem and was only about 40 dollars as opposed to almost 200.

My RIA 1911A1 shoots about 2" low also. As mentioned above aim high. I would not call it "frustrating" having to simply say "the gun shoots low". After all new sights=$50-200, aiming high=free!

yes as far as i know it the cuts on the slide are heinie style

no heinie does not make the sights for taurus
taurus makes the sights under license from heinie and if you read the heinie website they mention they do not warrenty or repair taurus sights

i have only about an inch low on my pt 1911 with heinie straight 8s but i would love adjustable sights (maybe on my next 1911) but i just love the 8s too much to change em

You can either knock out you front sight and send(cheaper) or send your slide to dawson precision. Tell them exactly how low your gun shoots at ten yards and they can make you a fiber optic front sight that is the correct height for your gun to shoot to point of aim. If you send just the sight it runs about $43 including return shipping. If you send in your slide they will remove your old sight and install the new sight for about $75 including return shipping. They also sell fiber optic sights on their website. For me personally I had a RIA tactical that shot about 3" high at ten yards. I sent them the slide and it came back with a custom height fiber optic front sight and the gun shot to point of aim. Give them a call. They can hook you up.
