1911 Tuner or any other knowledgable 1911 guys, I have a project I need advice on.

I am building a 1911a1 with a shoulder stock. The pistol had to be a C&R pistol due to the state law here in MI. I have aquired a Sistema with little finish but mehanically sound. The trigger is exceptional, at under 5 pounds and crisp. My plan is to replace the mainspring housing with a slotted one and add a stock. Numrich has the stock for sale with the housing. I plan with the stock is to replace the wood with a different shape to provide a better cheek weld if the stock is a poor fit to the sights. I don't have the stock yet as I am waiting for the paperwork before I purchase to stay legal. The pistol does need a new barrel. The barrel fit is good but the rifling looks like it has seen some corrosive ammo and the rifling is very shallow. The bushing is not very tight in the frame so it will be replaced. Since I would like to shoot out to 100 yards or more with the stock, I'm thinking of a new barrel, bushing and sights at a minimum. I may replace the slide as well if it will be a big help in accuracy. For sights I am considering a rear peep sight. I have never used a peep on a pistol but with the stock added I think it would give better results since my eye will be closer to the slide. If the stock was tight, I have even thought that a tang sight on the stock may not be a bad idea. It would increase the sight radius.

My question is, if this was your project, how would you build it. You must keep the frame. Everything else is fair game. Barrel length, slide configuration, stock design, etc. I'm looking for ideas. Thanks.

Remember that because of the Federal 1934 FCA, the barrel length must be 16 inches or longer. Otherwise the BATF&E will come along and take you away... :uhoh:

Correct, I have submitted the Form 1 to make a short barreled rifle. For some reason I always liked compact rifles and the idea of a pistol with a stock was something I wanted since I was a kid.

I have 2 concepts, one of which is quite a bit more radical than the other.

Buy one of the Mech-Tech carbine uppers. This would enable you to convert to 10mm or .38 Super if you choose, or remain with the tried and true .45 ACP. Cut the stock off the back end, and bolt a PPS43 (Soviet sub-gun), folding stock to the end of the Mech-Tech tube. Some of the smaller holo sights will fit on the Weaver rail and the stock should fold up and forward and straddle the back of the sight. (At least my measurements indicate that they should.)

Cut the barrel back to around 10". This should result in a nice, short package with a useable stock. I have not done this, but I have given it some thought.

The Mech-Tech does have a disadvantage in that it is hard to dissassemble for cleaning. Mine has been very reliable, accurate, and lots of fun. I think it would be just as reliable, and accurate, and even more fun in a shorter package.
