Springfield also offers their Government model for around 550, but it is plain jane parkerized with wood grips and fixed sights. Think gubment issue.

...the Taurus pt1911 is a great range gun, its really accurate and has a good trigger but I would not advise of it for any type of defense as the reliability sucks.

I sure wouldn't think a great range gun would be one that I had to clear every other magazine or even once every hundred rounds. OTOH, I reckon "great" could mean different things to people.

My PT1911 has eaten a little over 1500 rounds in a month and a half without a FTE or FTF. There's some finish wear, but that's all.

Maybe I got the only good one made.

To the OP:

ArrogantBastard the RIA seems to fit your requirements. Get it, shoot it, be happy with it. In a year, if you like the platform and you saved money, upgrade. It really is that simple. I highly doubt the RIA will disappoint you unless it's a lemon (which could come from any manufacturer) and it will come in handy in the future as a loaner to help get a newbie on the right track.

A new SA GI or mil-spec will be under $650, and used will bring the loaded in as an option. Also, take a look at the Taurus PT1911 - they have pretty good reviews.

I have over 2,000 rounds down the pipe of my PT1911 without a failure of any kind. It is an accurate and well made pistol and compares quite favorably to the other 1911's I've owned and the two others I currently have.

How is the Kahr Auto-Ordnance 1911?

I've read reviews that the old Auto-Ordnance 1911s were awful, but under Kahr were quite good. And it looks like one can be had new for $479.

Rellascout, even since Kahr bought them out?

I can't seem to find anybody around here who carries it. Can you suggest an online seller that can ship to a local firearms dealer for me?

I went with the Taurus 1911.

If I like it, I'll add a Les Baer to my growing collection.

I have one (Kahr made auto-ordnance). Picked it up a few weeks ago for $400. The trigger is very crisp, the slide is tight and everything is well put together, but it shoots low.

Like the "GI Spec" pistols tend to do, it doesn't like to feed hollowpoints. The factory magazine is garbage. Can't say I am thrilled with it, but it's an okay gun. I will be getting another "modern" 1911 at some point. Might keep the A/O just to have one that looks vintage, or get rid of it and pick up a SA GI. I will say that with Wilson Combat mags and ball/FMJ ammo it has been 100% reliable.

At the time I bought it, I could have had a RIA for $415, but I really dislike the huge "ROCK ISLAND ARMORY" on the slide and I would rather buy American, so I went with the Kahr.

What happened to the Baer you were thinking about?

Still thinking about it -- this gun was to try out a 1911 to see how I like it, before i shell out that kind of money on one.

Don't think..DO! I never shot a 1911 before I got my SA Loaded, I jumped both feet in. Only problem, it ruined all the other semi's I had and I have since sold them(except for a Ruger Mk1..plinker). 1911's are ultimate in cool, very accurate(at least mine is) and fun as hell. I am now contemplating getting a Springfield GI model in olive drab green.

I guess I'm working my way down instead of up.

I hope it is alright if I jump in with another question to piggyback on the OP.

Where would I find the best, yet lower priced, 1911 in 9mm? If you could post a name and the going rate for it, I would greatly appreciate it! I'm thinking one that will still have pretty good accuracy as well.

Thanks!

I was looking a the above photo of the RIA 1911 and it looks pretty clean until you look at he back of the hammer. Yikes! Looks like they crashed the mill half way through on that one. Other than that it looks pretty decent.
As far as reliability goes, anyone who knows anything about 1911's should know that the pistols requires a break in period of 300 or so rounds. This isn't some polymer auto that falls out of the mold ready to go but is rather a precision instrument that must be used to finish "sizing" the moving components. Once a 1911 has been "shot in" it will give the user years of reliable service. Much like a newly rebuilt perfomance engine, a 1911 has to be used for a while before it is "race" ready.

I've owned the following 1911s:

Colt Pre 70 Series GM
Colt 70 Series GM
Colt WW2 Repro 1911A1
Kimber Stainless Target II 9mm
Dan Wesson Pointman Major 9mm
SA Mil-Spec Parkerized
Sa Mil-Spec Stainless
Sistema 1927
RIA

Of those, only the Sistema and RIA have been 100% reliable, and the RIA is more accurate than the Sistema. I paid about $350 for the RIA and I couldn't be happier with it.

Charles Daly EFS, basically the same as a RIA Tactical but with a nicer finish and forward serrations.
