Wednesday I bought a Remington 1911R1 SS Enhanced. Wow does it shoot good. I put a box through it Wednesday night and surprised myself at how well it let me shoot it. It beats my M&P 9mm full-size with the 3-lb target trigger.

A buddy of mine has the Ruger 1911 and I'm quite impressed with it. I also really like what I see in the new Remingtons for the dollars spent. I'd prefer either of them over non-U.S. 1911s. Either of them would be a great starting point if you want to personalize them, or you can leave them exactly as-is for a perfectly functional 1911. Doesn't get a lot better than that.
 
Kimber and Ruger would where I would look first.

I own a Kimber CustomII and it has been a wonderful pistol for me. I feed it primarily my own reloads and usually lead ones and never have a problem. It gobbles up whatever I feed it (always wanting more).

Ruger does a fine job.I have owned several over the years without any trouble.

But honestly few companies worry me right now with the exception of Remington. I have shot a Taurus 1911 and it shot fine only suffering because of the comparsion I can make with my Kimber.

A good buddy loves his Auto-Ordance.
 
I have had 2 Rock's and they both shot great. I just sold my Firestorm DLX. One of the best trouble free 1911's I've ever owned. This was NOT a drama queen 1911.

1911's suck. You won't get a proper gun for that amount. If you want a reliable 1911, you most likely wont get it for that price. If you spend 1.5k, then maybe you will get a reliable gun. That is a big maybe.
 
^ I'm guessing you have had a poorly made one.
I think there are many 1911 owners with less than $1k invested that would disagree with that statement, myself included. I'm approaching 7k trouble free rounds through mine. I also torture tested mine for function and gave up when I hit 1k with no jams or misfires in a combination of hardball and reloads with no cleaning.
 
I got a 1911 and finally got to shoot it at the range. What is so special about the 1911? Why is there such a following of gun owners? All I can feel is that it fits my hand great.
 
Can't go wrong with SA 1911's. Both of my sons have the Mil-Spec model, both paid around $700 and neither has had a single malfunction from the first round on the first day using both factory ammo and our reloads. I love my Sig 1911 Nitron but I paid about $900 and it wasn't quite as reliable until I had put 500-600 through it and changed over to WC mags. SA 1911's--best buy for the money.

Stinger 327. hand fit is one of the reasons, It's a well designed pistol, and essentialy rather simple in nature.

but I believe that the primary reason is it's iconic nature/culture. Much in the same way that Harley Davidson has such a following. Sure there are others out there that do the same thing - but a 1911, like a harley, in whatever form or permutation - is instantly recognizable.

Feeling good in my hand and appearance of 1911 style was the reason for me. I just find the prices to be very expensive on these guns.
 
I have and shoot 6 different RIA pistols, had to send the 10mm. back for service, had it back in two weeks. they have a no BS Lifetime Warranty.
for the price, you get a great gun...:D

These RIA 1911's are priced right. I wouldn't want to spend more than $599 for the RIA 1911 Tactical I got.
 
My Ruger has been awesome from the start. Feeds, fires, and ejects everything I have put in the mags without exception. 0 malfunctions. I feel that it is hard to beat it when you include the warranty and the price. My brother has a basic Rock Island and it is a hammer too. The RI needed the feed ramp polished so it would feed hollowpoints reliably.

Did he break in the RIA with 500 rounds as instructed?
 
No, i had a taurus, but that was the only cheap one. I have also owned kimber, 2 springfields, and a smith n wesson. for a range gun I dont mind but when i have taken classes with them that involved lots of rounds, not one has made it through without me messing with it. I wont use them anymore in comps either. I want to love the 1911, I love it's looks and the feel, but they are an overpriced, outdated, fussy platform that requires more care than any modern pistol. A 1200 dollar gun should perform as well or better than a $4-600 gun. That is not the case with the 1911. I have moved on to modern platforms and don't have the problems I used to. It made me feel like a fool to be messing around with my 1911's meanwhile glocks, cz's, sigs, walthers, smith n wessons, etc. kept running much better.I do miss the trigger from the 1911 though. I still have my smith, but it's a range toy now.
 
I have an RIA tactical on the way. Paid $464.00 including shipping and another $15.99 for an extra Mec-Gar Gov't magazine. I have seen these for as low as $449.00 + whatever shipping would cost.

I currently have an Umarex Regent that I paid $300.00 NIB. Turkish made 1911 clone. Very nice entry level 1911. My brother-in-law keeps salivating over it, so its going to be a Christmas gift for him.

I have never owned a Rock but always hear good things about them. Looking forward to receiving it.
 
American Classic line up under a 1000 Lots of good 1911 for less than a grand.

Look for a used Colt I had bad luck with Kimber so I leave them alone
 
Look used at a LGS or Pawn shop. I recently scored a Springfield Loaded in stainless for $600. Once I got the box and everything (out of state purchase had to ship) I found the original sales receipt in the box from 1 month prior with price listed a $850. Only one little scratch, not too worried about it I'm sure I'll put my fair share on it in time.
