It was new and unfired when it came to me.

That's rare!

The WWII generation would have said that was a rifle for drilling round holes in square heads!

Love the spotting scope. Looks vintage too.

Not all that rare.

It's a stand alone rifle without a chest or scope can.

But oh boy does it shoot.

I know I've said it before...I can't decide whether I love you or hate you. I have a lot of rifles (~60), many of them mil-surps, but few of them are as nice as the ones you have.

Thanks for the eye candy

Is that a Savage made No.4(T)?

I thought those were all made in England.

About a 1000 Longbranch No4 Mk1* were converted to the (T) with the CNo32 scopes and a 100 more with Lyman Alaskan scopes.

Only a handful of Savage No4 Mk1* were converted to (T) and these were never fitted with a scope. Even then they are quite rare.

You just have to watch out for the fakes, like with what Century International did flooding the market with normal No4 Mk1s and Mk1*s that they tried to pass off as original snipers.

This is an H&H rifle assembled in the UK

But made in the USA. The legend goes that many, as many as 2,400 as little as 1200 Savage #4's went to H&H. there are somany levels of inspection in the orders for the TR's that a lot of good rifles would get returned for small things. At each inspection the rifle moved on to the next step. Sights accuracy and a dozen outher things could get a rifle dropped at thar stage. Almost all the Savage's sent past all but the barrel spec. Even with very good accuracy they had two groove barrels and the spec was five groove. But unlike the other British rifles that missed one inspection the Savage's where not sent back to the maker. They went into storage and near the wars end where rebarreld with five groove barrels. All or none of this may be fact. I have heard most of this 2ed hand but I was standing on the ground at Bisley in the UK for one part of the story.

So Savage did make the rifle but no they didn't assemble any #4T's. About a dozen Savage $4T's, yes $4t's did get married to scope sets and kit. I have also heard of and seen one picture of a complete Savage $4T lit in NZ.

I have not read any of the new books out on this subject so I'm sure my picture of it is very dated.

But on the other hand I'm packing my '42 13C up for the AM.

I have about 300 rounds through this one. I'm working on a round based on the 151g .310" FMJBT from PRIVI but it's only been fair~OK at this time.

. I think going back to IMR 4064 might gather up another .5" MOA and that's big for these rifles they already have a sweet spot at 400 yards.

Think of it as a 10" wide 18" tall space you own out too 500 yards with your base zero. By the book the UK guys used 350 yards as point blank.

Read Peter Laidler's book on it. Read it twice!

Well bottom line the 174g SMK is still your best bet with IMR 4064. But if I can make these 150's work I will have a lot more fun this year. The IMR 4895 might not be what I need. Plus SMK's are $30 a box of 100 now.

I'm also starting a project to run the 7.62X54R Privi brass and 150g FMJ Privi bullet in a Mosin 91/30 against the 174g SMK.

If you have been there done that share the results with me and save me the powder.

Cheers

Dude, you are killing me. I had a Longbranch years ago that was drilled for the scope mount and the rear stock was a mismatch. I was never able to get it back to it's original sniper condition. The parts were too cost prohibitive to make it worth while. I have to compliment you on your collection, I am very jealous. Bill

MJ,

I don't know who I hate more.. Zak, or you..... LOL.

It is always a pleasure looking at both of your collections. You should consider writing a book about the subject.

Makes me want to take my Savage out and see how she does.

Thanks for the info.

Beautiful rifles, as always MJ.

Thank you DMK

Now get out there today and shoot it.
