I am about to pick up a .357 4 5/8th barrel.
It has the black synthetic grips on it now and has a bit of holster wear and cylinder turn showing but otherwise tight and good to go.
Since I don't care much for the black original grips, I want to change them out for some imitation aged ivory or stag. I think this style would marry up nicely with the honest wear from use and I would save the originals for down the road.

Altamont seems to be the best deal but I don't know what a 1958 Blackhawk grip size is.

From what I understand it is XR3 and not XR or XR3-RED. I have even read that the grip size is the same as the original Colt SAA. Can anyone get me straight on this?
Thank you.

I bought these on eBay From Jay Scott's grip chart, the No 24 size is for the XR3 so I hope I did OK. I think these should look good on it for the price I paid.
Altamont does not carry the early Blackhawk Grips from what I can tell. Too bad, I really like the aged Ivory they carry for the newer models.

Wait till you get the gun.

Then read what it says on the grip Frame.

They all have the frame mold designation molded into the frame.

On this one ... RC ... I think I'm gonna be OK. I did pretty much research. Found the link to the serial no lookup and dated it to 1958. The only change they made in mid to late 58 was the ejector button design. I think this one has type two of the three.
Then the XR3-RED frame started in 1963 LINK
I think these pearl grips will somewhat take away from the slight distractions of holster wear and moderate cylinder ring.
When I get this all together, I will follow up.

See images: Mine should look like this or slightly better. Thanks to Google for the image I borrowed and from my listing I bought.

You also might want to check out privatescustomgrips.com for some great looking wood grips that he makes for Ruger single actions. This is a pair of American Holly grips on my Flattop .44 Special and they're fantastic!

Thanks guys for the leads but I bought and paid for the pearl Jat Scotts already. I don't even get the revolver til tomorrow. LOL

I did check out Eagle and will check out the privatescustomgrips anyway since I have a thing about grips and other revolvers.

Late edit: Those sure are nice at privatescustomgrips.com, especially the Antique Micarta yours appear to be. Almost looks like aged ivory, grain and all. I liked the Maple Burl, Spalted Maple, and Crotch Walnut best.

My grips look like ivory but are not micarta; they're actually made from American Holly wood. They're a fraction of the cost of real ivory and the fit and finish are perfect.

Well tomorrow I get the pistol. I have seen it and handled it. I like my stuff looking like new but for an old flat top, I'll have to make an exception. It does come with the correct black rubber grips and they are in great condition.
I just don't care for them all that much although they are worth over a hundred bucks alone, and will keep them safe in a box. Down the road, I might trade the revolver or sell it.

It would've shipped with the XR3 grip frame and if the grips are checkered black rubber, it's a guarantee that's what it is. Here's some micarta on a `60.

And elk antler on a `58.
