And pretty rare to boot. How much trigger time do you give that bad boy? Or do you shoot it much, if at all?

Would love to luck into one... a boy can dream.

Very nice slick. VERY!

Has it been reblued?

Every 520 I've seen (4 specimens) was much more roughly finished than even a typical model 28.

Baba Louie:

No, My M520 has never been fired. I am only collecting this revolver and have no intention to fire it-despite the temptation to do this!:uhoh:

highorder:

You must have seen a bad batch of the 520 NYSP revolvers. Mine is factory original and it has never been reblued. There were two of these revolvers together whenever I bought this 520 and both had beautiful blue finishes.:what::) Their serial numbers were real close together.

All of the ones on gunbroker now have that nice blue finish and are right up there in Python value.

slick, ya suppose it was at least "factory fired" before it shipped out? I mean... well, your self control is far far greater than my own would be. But that certainly is a fine looking fixed sight N frame.

Did S&W ever make other fixed sight N frames other than the old 1917/37s? Have to check out Supica's book when I get home tonight.

Baba Louie:

The other Smith & Wesson "Fixed sight" N-frame revolvers are:

1)The 38/44 Heavy-Duty-also known as the model 20.

2)The M&P model 58(.41 Mag.).

The model 520 NYSP has the distinction of being the only "Fixed sight" N-frame .357 Magnum revolver produced by Smith & Wesson.

My 520 NYSP revolver shows no sign of being test fired by S&W. This could be because S&W was in a rush to complete the NYSP contract for 3,000 of these revolvers,

I'd forgotten about the 58 and the old Outdoorsman.

Looking over the 4 on GB just now, each is NIB unfired. Somewhere there has got to be one that the buyer, like moi would if he could, took out for a cylinder or three or four full of .357 fun.

Guess I'll stick with my plebian 28-2. It's only about 1/4 the value of some of those 520s... maybe.

Thanks for the info... not to mention inspiring the lust within via your photos. I'm a sinner, what can I say, besides grumble grumble slick's a lucky sumunagun? ;)

The statement that"...most 520's I've seen were more roughly finished than the mod. 28's I've seen.... causes me to wonder if highhoarder has ever actually seen one.
Here's mine:

Baba Louie:

Most of the 520 NYSP revolvers are NIB or LNIB. However, I've seen a few that had been fired somewhat. But, most sellers of collectible guns don't lower their value because the gun had been shot-which is incorrect. Condition plus completeness in terms of having box, papers, tools is the criteria to determine top dollar value. Then, to deduct value for a gun not in top condition nor being complete as a package! You are right to shoot your M28 instead of investing in a 520 NYSP revolvor for just shooting it. The value drops for any collectible gun having been shot! Thanks for the positive comments on my 520 NYSP revolver!

I inherited my 520 from a NJST relative who got it in 1979 or slightly before and only shot it a few times before he succumbed to Cancer. It is one of the smoothest N frames I have and I have more than a few dating back to Triple Locks forward to 1989. If it was 3.5" it would be the perfect .357 fighting revolver IMHO. The sights on mine are dead nutz on with 158 grain .357 ammo at 25 yards, I mean perfectly sighted in which seems rare to me. Extremely smooth and well finished , the trigger can be stroked fast enough to sound like a buzz gun. I have shot it enough that it is NOT a museum piece.

Close- it was the only N-frame .357 magnum. They also produced the model 13 and either the L-Framed New 519 or the 520.

Thanks for catching my typo error via not inserting N-frame in my wording above for my 520 NYSP revolver!
