1984 S&W 686 (no dash)

:D There was a 3-5-7 series of 686+ revolvers that had unfluted cylinders and grips specifically to that series. Naturally, they came in 3”, 5” and 7” barrel lengths.

I shoulda bought a 5” when they were around locally..😞

Stay safe.
what was special about the 3-5-7? my tactical shop (doesn’t know dash or specials) has a unfluted 686 7 shot that’s (used) 5” I believe. $799

It was just a factory run of “deluxe” guns with special grips, odd-length barrels and unfluted cylinders for the L frame series. I guess it could be considered sort of like a Lipsey’s or Lew Horton special, but cutting out the distributor as the middle-man.

Down here they go for about 1k new.

Stay safe.

I am in the market for a 4" 686 or 586. I just can't find one at a price I can bring myself to pay yet.

I love the earlier model 586/686, my favorite revolver by a decent margin. My favorite that I own is the 1982 6" 686 shown in the photo below. I really don't see how a revolver could be more perfectly suited to my preferences and tastes. It fits my hand just right with an action that seems smoother and lighter than should be possible with a 100% reliable gun, perfect D/A and S/A trigger pulls, and bullseye level accuracy. I've owned a lot of guns and shot a lot more belonging to friends and shooting acquaintances, but this one is my favorite revolver. My 2nd favorite is the 1983 model 586, but for actual shooting, the 6" 686 with its slightly lighter action edges it out. (I did work the action a little bit on the 686 back in the mid-1980s by re-profiling the main spring and lightening the trigger rebound spring. I also slightly reduced the diameter of the hammer nose to improve primer ignition with the light action.)

Very nice, 357....we're I to pick one revolver, for all purposes, for all time here in the lower 48, I'd be hard pressed to find a better choice than that 686of yours with its 4" tube. A bit heavy some would say for all-day carry, but for shooting that same weight mitigates recoil with heavy loads. You've chosen a winner, padnuh. Best regards, Rod

I've never had much/any interest in the 5/686 series of guns, in spite of the fact that I've owned a couple, but never fired them before selling/trading them off for something else. I grew up a fan of the Model 19 and was sort of offended that Smith and Wesson thought it could be replaced. 😢

However, I saw a really nice 686, 4", not long ago that tempted me. I already had something on layaway so I passed on it. Maybe if a nice 586 with a 4" turns up, I'll let my arm get twisted.
