So I want to get my 8 year-old his first BB gun for Christmas. Gonna be a real 'Christmas Story' moment! I'll save it until last, put it in the corner. He hasn't really asked for one, but I want him to start shooting, and what 8 year-old boy wouldn't want a BB gun?

Any recommendations on a particular BB gun?

It has to be a Daisy Red Ryder - "You'll put your eye out!"

Also buy a copy of "A Christmas Story" at the same time, and watch it first... Then, after the movie is over, surprise the kid with the BB gun...

Or...a Daisy 880 or similar. Variable pressure, slower to load. and upgradable with optics.

Get him something decent . . . maybe a pellet rifle with a rifled barrel. At 8 years old, the inaccuracy of a simple BB gun will soon frustrate him.

Be sure to teach him about eye protection and the Four Rules.

And a suggestion . . . once you trust him to shoot unsupervised, make it an ironclad rule that he can do so ONLY if he's alone. One kid, alone, will show more good sense than the same kid with his buddies.

I got mine at 7, it was variable and shot both pellets and bbs. It was always treated as a firearm.

My son shoots quarter sized groups at 10 yards with his...
When I was a kid, mine did, too . . . the problem is, the groups were at least half a foot off to the right from where the sights were!

Beyond that distance, accuracy fell off faster than distance increased.

Red Ryder is fine for a supervised 8yo. Plenty accurate for plinking cans, and it doesn't make a lot of noise (good for backyard).

I'll second the Daisy 880. There is an extra step to firing (charging the "bolt" to pick off a BB from the reservoir), but it's a pneumatic rifle that he won't outgrow; he'll graduate from it straight to a .22LR rifle.

One easy pump and you're looking at around 250FPS, ten pumps churns out 750 FPS... and it's an inexpensive rifle to boot.

If you check out Sportsman's Guide, from time to time they offer reman 880's with the metal barrel and receiver.

It's what I started on. ;)

The current Daisy 880 is nearly all plastic junk, compared to the 880 of even 10 years ago.

If you're willing to spend a bit, I'd reccomend a Sheridan multi-pump, bolt action single shot pellet rifle.

Almost all of the bb guns that are sold at superstores from Crossman and Daisy are junk. They're built like toys, and that encourages children to use them like toys.

If you're on a tight budget I reccomend going somewhere like www.compasseco.com and getting one of the less expensive Chineese offerings. The low-end Daisy and Crossman stuff probably comes from there now anyway (just my guess), but the direct Chi-com stuff is at least real metal and wood, and at least built along the same principles as the better Beeman and RWS guns, and the higer end offerings from Daisy and Crossman you can't find in the stores.

I wouldn't let a child use an air rifle unsupervised unless I lived in a completely rural or semi-wilderness type of area, and only then, alone as another poster said, no friends, and only after a year or more of demonstrating responsible use. If it was even a semi-suburban area in nature, I'd probably allways demand to supervise because too many homes and other property is in the area.

If it's completely suburban neighborhood, with lots one acre in size or less, houses on all sides of you etc., I'd rather get him one of the less expensive airsoft spring-cocker replicas, and let him shoot boxes or paper cups in the garage or basment, or just get him a real .22 LR and make the commitment to take him to the range frequently.

Suburban neighborhoods are just to "tight" for air rifle plinking these days, both physically, and "poiltically". :(

I have a 760 Pump Master (could be the name for a blow up date):D

It shoots pellets alot more accurate than BB's.
