If it's really stuck, or you're worried about damaging your barrel, try this:

Prime and charge a case, but instead of seating a bullet in it, just put a bit of paper towel in for wadding. Then take it to the range and shoot it out. That way the bullet exits the gun the way it was intended to.

forgets to move the shell plate one time, and that's all it takes.......

From where the bullet is lodged in the barrel, I would say there wasn't any powder at all in the case. The primer alone will push the bullet that far. In matches, I see a few squib loads once in awhile, and that's where the primer normally pushes them to.

Most of the squibs I see are on manually indexing presses. The operator gets distracted, either physically, or mentally, and forgets to move the shell plate one time, and that's all it takes.......

Hope this helps.

Fred

Fred, on my Dillon 550, if I "Forget" to move the index plate, I get a DOUBLE charge--NOT a no charge...

Has not happened to me to date, but it could anytime...I use proper load habits to avoid..Bill.;)

billybob44,

For some reason, in our monthly matches, most of the squib loads are coming off 550B's, from quite a few different users. I don't use one, having sold the one I won as quickly as I could. I just didn't care for it at all for my method of reloading. I just know that whenever one of our competitors has a squib load, I normally ask them what kind of press they're using, and the 550B is the normal answer. Understand they we're going through several thousand rounds per year, so the volume is way up there, and the chances of a mishap are multiplied by the sheer numbers of rounds loaded.

It's not a monthly occurrence, but I'd say several times a year, and not always the same shooters. I can't explain it, I just report it.

Hope this helps.

Fred

Thanks Fred..

Yea, I have a good "Comfort Level" with the 550B. It is just right for the slow speed that I load at.

I'm sure if I were loading the volume that you guys are shooting at, I would have a few more 'Issues"??....HA HA...Bill.;)

billybob44,

I just got home from our monthly match, and you guessed it, two squib loads from the same shooter and they were loaded on his 550B. He's no spring chicken, and I'm sure he isn't as careful as he should be when loading, but we had him stop shooting, since he stuck two different .38 bullets in his Marlin rifle.

I'm not condemning the press, only the operator and his method of using the press, which requires more attention to detail than some other machines.

Hope this helps.

If I'd had two stuck bullets you wouldn't have had to stop me. I'd have done it myself. Probably after the first one on the chance of another being double charged.
