Anyone have a recommendation for an every day knife w/blade < 2 1/2" ?

I am looking for a folding knife with a smaller blade.
No specific task in mind - general every day use.
I have a few other knifes (Fallkniven F1, Kershaw Leek, Spyderco Delica 4) and have been pleased with quality.

I find myself carrying the Spyderco more than the Kershaw. I like the poly handle & opening mechanism. I would like try some similar, but have not found one I like.

I have seen the Spyderco Co-Pilot (2" blade), but would like to hear what else is out there.
 
Hmm. I immediately thought about the Spyderco Native, but that has a blade length of 3 1/8, though the cutting edge is only 2 5/8.

Just from my personal experience, you might want to give the Boker Subcom a try. It's an inexpensive little knife, and it won't be as quick to open as the Spyderco or the Leek, but for a non-tactical, everyday sort of thing that is still a one-handed arrangement to open, I think you might like it. It's 2 5/8 closed, and the blade is only 1 7/8. It's a wide little thing, which has the effect of making it feel and handle like a bigger knife than it really is. I happen to have the Boker Subclaw, which is more of a hooked type of thing, and I like it pretty well. I think the Subcom is probably more suitable to everyday use, but whatever. They are cheap enough that there isn't any real reason for me not to buy a Subcom too!

I'll second the Dragonfly.

The Kershaw Scallion is another well built small knife.

I had one of each. My son now has the Scallion and my wife EDC's the Dragonfly. If I had to pick between the two, I'd go with the dragonfly simply because I prefer the blade profile. Not a big fan of recurves or liner locks (being left handed).

I was not aware of the Dragonfly - looks like a good fit for me.

And I could always use another Kershaw ...
I could try a new brand for me with the Boker ....
I do have a birthday coming up ...:)

Boker 240 with carbon steel blades. This is a 3 1/8" closed , Tree Brand Classic , Rosewood handle offering. Main blade is clip, smaller is a pen.

If you like a wharncliffe blade, the Boker trance might also be of interest, although to me that doesn't look like a wharncliff. Whatever, it's still a good looking knife that fits your size requirements.

I would add thta I am not necessarily a huge fan of Boker (though I have nothing against them) as much as I really like these Chad Los Banos designs. I also like the quality/price ratio which seems to be high/low.
 
Are you set on a "modern" style knife?

If not the wonderfull world of traditional slip-joints would expand your choices a thousand percent.

(seeing as how sm brought them up)

Are you totally wedded to the idea of a modern style one hand lockblade.?

If not, some of the trimmer size tradtional pocket knives offer alot of cutting utility, more than a single lockblade, in a smaller more pocketable package. Not to mention more socially acceptable.

Knives like the afor mentioned Boker 240 or Victorinox pocket pal offer two blades in a very slim package that will seem to disapear in a pocket. A Victorinox pioneer settler with will give you the Victorinox alox "built like a tank" contruction in a light slim package 3 1/3 inches with a sturdy 2 1/2 inch blade. A second small 1 1/2 inch pen blade is on the other end.

Check out some of the two bladed pocket knives that have only a single backspring. Some very nice pocket knives. And an extra blade gives you options.

Case makes a nice one called a pen knife, at 3 1/8 inches long, single backspring, nice handle selections of bone or synthetic. Can't recall the model number right now.

If you wish to add a usefull tool, look at the Victorinox bantam. A 2 1/2 inch blade at one end, a combo screwdriver/bottle opener/ can opener on the other end. Only 3 1/4 inch closed. Tweezers and toothpick in the handle. That bottle opener makes short work of a cold Corona at the end of the day, if you don't know the dollar bill trick. I've also used it to tighten the loose battery cable on my Vespa motorscooter.

Old Timers are the ones with 1095 blades that take on a patina, and have brown Delrin handles.
Uncle Henry's have stainless blades, with Delrin that looks like Stag (Staglon ?)

Now these are some nice EDCs with one, two, or three blades.
If memory serves me correct UH made a small one, with a main blade and pair of scissors with a bail.

Some of the Old Timers do have a brass liner lock.
One is a Trapper and one is a small one blade knife that is really neat!

There is a two blade knife about 3 1/8" in the OT line I like, akin to the Boker 240.
Darn handy, great for making a mess with a stick and it will handle a lot of chores.

I don't have an 18OT Mighty Mite ,the liner locking single blade.

All have (main) blades between 2 1/2" and 2"
 
For a slip joint in your size range I really like the medium stockman.These are around 3 1/4" with a main blade around 2 3/8". Available in a wide range from inexpensive imports up to customs.

Only someone under 40 years old would post a picture of a pocket-knife in the middle of a black plastic knife and one made of nasty old stainless steel...

108OT Junior Stockman : This is a great pocket knife allowing one a lot of total edge length , in 3 blades, and blades that do task well.

Clip- general cutting, removes splinters from body parts, wood removing when whittling
Sheepsfoot- straight line cuts, light rope, and certain cuts when whittling, akin to a small "coping" blade.
Spey - Skinning small game , catfish cleaning (nail cat to tree, cut around , pull skin with pliers) , trout (remove innards), special cuts when whittling.

I likes this one a lot! I'd carry one if'n I had one.

This is the knife for those that want a gentleman's knife/ ladies knife, that will do what needs doing and is proven in doing so.
Folks use it, because they carry it, and if one carries something , they have something to use.
Yes I know that is profound, and yes you may quote me.

The Minuteman is legal to carry and use in restrictive settings. It shares this with Case Peanuts, Buck Lancer, Hen & Rooster pen knife, Boker 8228...

It disappears in a pocket for lady or gent.
Oh it will whittle!
It will also clean trout, birds, breast trash ducks, clean small game, make a fire, open a box, open mail, cut garden hose....
I know, I dunnit.

This knife will surprise folks, what all it can and has done!
You can open this one one handed, and close it one handed.


18OT Mighty Mite, This one will too will fool folks!
This one is neat to use cutting leather and delicate cuts on wood.

It will also cut a rack of ribs into, and one gets a free dessert and coffee for demonstrating this...
(it worked for me twice anyways)


These old American Shrades are good knives.
If you get one, respect it, appreciate it, still these are proven users.

No - but this is what I find myself carrying this days.
I have a few slip-joints, more of the 'old timer' style. But I don't find much use for some of the small/thin blades.

A number of the knifes mentioned have blades > 2 1/2".
I like bigger blades, but I am trying to find a knife <2 1/2" to comply with a local ordinance .....
In some cases, I struggled to find out the length of blades on some of the knifes reference above.

It has been years since I have carried a small Swiss Army knife. I like the recommendation for a Victorinox bantam - might have to pick one up !
 
If you were not limited to folders;I'd recommend one of the Carson neck-hangers that CRKT has...sturdy,light;and with useful blade designs. OAL is pretty short;yet there is just enough handle/hilt to hang on to.
 
A perfect example - as close as your neighborhood Wally World - the Buck #503 'Prince'. Yep - nasty old 420HC SS - but what a great edge. A 2.5" bladed lockback - made in the USA - <$25, too. Kind of a micro 110.
