Houston police seek man who disarmed an officer during struggle

A man who managed to wrestle a gun away from an HPD officer is sought by police.

ABC13 Eyewitness News

(12/31/02) — A Houston policeman had his gun wrestled away from him Monday night. The suspect and the gun are still on the run.

It all started at the Regency Walk Apartments on Sandpiper near Willowbend in southwest Houston.

The landlord of the complex noticed someone had moved into a vacant apartment without paying for it and added a lock so no one could get in. The landlord called police and they went into the apartment. That's when the trouble started.

"As the officer was handcuffing the suspect, the suspect started a struggle with the officer," said HPD spokesperson, John Cannon. "The suspect was able to grab the officer's duty weapon, and during the course of the struggle a shot was fired."

The suspect also grabbed some keys and took off in a car. The car was later recovered but the suspect is still on the loose.

No one was hurt in the struggle.

Officer has gun taken from him during struggle

By ABC13 Eyewitness News

(1/03/03) — For the second time in a week, a Houston police officer lost his gun during a struggle.

The latest incident began shortly after 11am Friday at an Easy Pawn on Federal Road. Two suspects robbed it and threatened to kill the customers while a third gunman waited outside.

As they made their getaway, they were stropped by an HPD officer. He struggled with one of the suspects who managed to take the officer's gun and pointed it at him.

The suspect never fired the weapon and all three of them were captured a short while later.

San Antonio beat that. In ONE incident, an otherwise unarmed perp took away the gun of a patrolman, shot him with it, ran out of ammo shooting at a detective, slugged the detective, took away the detective's gun, and kept right on truckin'. Shot two other police before one of them shot the perp 6 times causing him to bleed out and collapse on top of the LEO who shot him.
