I'm looking at buying a Smith & Wesson 908 in the black/blue variety made no earlier than 2007. I have a double stack semiauto and I'm looking to buy a single stack semiauto for conceal carry.

This old thread (2003) speaks of plastic sights and a plastic guide rod:

Do the newly produced 908 pistols come with metal sights or are they still plastic?

Joseph I don't know (or even if it matters ?), but I just ordered one. The
M908 is a pistol type I've wanted for some years now, a single stack 9mm. My usual carry is a G17 with plastic sights and guide rod, so far the plastic has caused zero problems. I expect my 908 to be the same only smaller.
If you have your S&W 908, I'd like to hear your impressions of the gun as mine won't ship till 3 - 5 business days. Good shooting.

Fine choice in weapons there. I can't comment on the newer 908's plastic content, I can only assume that they are still plastic.

I purchased my 908 around 4 years ago, have put several thousand rounds through it and carried it many a mile.

I did have one problem, the magazine release button broke while shooting one day. Returned it to S&W (on S&W's dime) and it was returned to me quickly, 10-14 days if memory serves. Has been 100% flawless other than that. I have not lost one bit of faith in the pistol, it still protects my family and I.

Don't let a plastic guide rod and plastic sights get you down, you will still have a good quality S&W pistol that will serve you well for years to come.

I recently purchased a 908. I really enjoyed shooting it at the range... over 300 rounds to break it in. Not a single complaint from me.

I just ordered a 3913 steel guide rod to drop in the 908. It fits and functions as far as not firing live ammunition. The guide rods themselves are very close in length, but the smaller captive spring end is shorter. The 3913 rod's smaller captive rod does not lock into place and thus prevents any compression on itself. I would imagine that this would cause excessive battery to the frame possibly ??

Any comment on what I described and if it is safe to operate the 908 with the 3913 guide rod.

I put a LNIB 4566 with a melonite finish and decoker only on lay away recently.... I can't wait for that:D
