Gun rags are for the birds. Haven't bought one in at least 5 years.
These days, most people would rather have the free opinion of a nameless, faceless internet character with no accountability than that of a professional whose name and face is on everything he writes. Unfortunately, you can't learn everything from Google and internet forums and it's always painfully obvious to me those that have tried doing so. While I've learned a good bit from folks online, it stands pale in comparison to what I have gained from the written word of folks like Ross Seyfried, Elmer Keith, Skeeter Skelton, Townsend Whelen, Julian Hatcher, John Taffin, Mickey Fowler, Lee Jurras, Brian Pearce, Bob Milek, Hal Swiggett, Max Prasac, JD Jones, Dave Scovill, John Lachuk and countless others. While magazines like G&A have little to offer an experienced shooter, those like Rifle and Handloader and a good many others are quite different.

I emailed Hodgdon, mentioned the article, and whether trail boss was acceptable for use in cap and ball revolvers. There response is as follows:

Trail Boss is a smokeless powder and this should not be used in a cap and ball revolver or any other firearm that is not proofed for modern smokeless powder.
