20gauge verus 28 gauge ammo

a 28 single shot is my favorite gun for rabbits over beagles. I have killed a truck load of rabbit and squirrel with a 28 ga . since I don't try to kill ever rabbit we ran 2 boxes of shells did me fine for a season . Since My last beagle is 13 and retired . I don't have enough places to train a new brace of dogs . When My coworker decided to get his son a single shot 28 to start him out shooting , then told me he could not find one anywhere , I gave mine to his son . If it gets a kid into hunting and shooting it is money well spent

Is there any wonder people and companies are fleeing NY? I guess you could get a MEC loader. Can you order components like wads and cases? Powder, shot, and primers are easy to find at LGSs.

So you either learn to reload or make a trip now and again East or West to a place that sells it. N.E. isn't THAT big, especially to the east.

Except for the really nice 28 field guns built on 28 sized frames, most less expensive ones are built on a 20 gauge frame so the bit about repair parts is moot.

Beretta is probably the most readily available and affordable, while AyA, Arrietta, Garbi, Arrizabalaga, (those four from Spain), some of the Turkish ones, the English, most of the Germans, and most of the Italians. At one time we did too.

Check out the new Ithaca model 37 in 28 ga. They handle like a wand, have good triggers, and pattern beautifully. American made, too.

The ejection port is smaller - because 28 doesn't come in 3" - but what about the height, width, and length? I'll bet they are the same as Remington is NOT going to retool a production and incur those costs for their base model gun. My money says the frame size is a 20 for both.

870s tend to be heavy, anyway, considering the steel receiver. I like the Ithacas, but they're pricey for pumps. I'd rather have an auto or a O/U in 28, anyway. Man, a 28 gauge gas gun should be SWEET on the shoulder.

i don,t know about the hight,width but the lenth of the 20ga receiver is .5" longer, but there is not much weight difference. here are rem 870ex,s in 410,28ga,20ga and a 110028 sporting. eastbank.

28 or 20 gauge?

In my opinion, unless you already have a really nice 28 gauge shotgun there's really no reason to move away from 20 gauge. There are no compelling reasons I can see to make the switch to 28 gauge and a whole lot of negatives:

- higher ammo cost
- limited ammo availability
- less effect on target

Less effect - not if you do your part there isn't. If you are the type who shoots a few hand-tossed ones in the backyard before hunting season and then tries to spray and pray for success, use a 10 gauge; otherwise the 28 gives up nothing to the 20 for regular upland hunting.

If you are asking if Browning is on a true 28 frame, the answer is no - they make two frame size - 12 and 20

Yup - the BPS in 28ga is still a seven pound gun. And that's way too much for what's supposed to be a light walkabout scattergun.

Now, a nice Merkel 28 SxS at around 5.5 pounds is awesome, but it ain't cheap. The new Beretta A400 28 IS smaller than the 20 it seems and is only a touch over 5# - actually TOO light for me as I found it to be whippy.

A 28 ga. Guerini with 28 inch barrels is listed at 6 pounds 5 ounces and handles nicely. MSRP is $3450. This one is 6# 2 oz.



The 12 ga. 870 Exp. Mag. has a 28" barrel too.
