got a new .22.250, 1:14 twist, I know 55 gr. supposed to be ideal but will a larger say 60-72 gr. bullet work with this setup?? would like larger bullet for hogs etc.

Luling eh? You're right in my back yard. I'm up north of Austin.

1:14 is going to be generally solid up to the 55's. Anything over that is going is a crap shoot. My CZ Varmint is a 1:14 and it loves 52 grainers. It'll also shoot 55 gr. soft points, but it wouldn't stabilize anything heavier... like 60 gr Nosler Partitions for example.

Might handle a 60; mine shoots Hornady softpoints pretty well but not hollowpoints the same weight... they are longer.
The 63 gr Sierra is a semispitzer and will probably work, the 70 gr Speer is very blunt and should shoot ok, it does in mine.

should handle a 70 speer ok, but 22-250's are generally at their best w/ 50-55 grain bullets. if you are chasing bc, have a look at sierra's 55 grain bthp - about the best bc you're gonna get for a 22-250 and fits right into the 22-250's wheelhouse for accuracy, and velocity.

22-250's with a 1:12 twist are a bit individual - the rule to follow is : the shorter the bullet and the faster you move it the higher the twist rate number (slower it is spun) can be to maintain accuracy. This is why the 204 Ruger has been so successful - as it shoots 30 and 40 grain bullets with half the powder, less recoil, less noise and less fouling than a 22-250.

Art, I know you know how to pronounce Stairtown, it aint Stair town is it. Strongbad, down here around Luling we are overrun with pigs. I use anything from a .17hmr to a .308 and even a good shot with the .17 has put them down in their tracks. I just love a .22-250 and my girlfriend will probably use it this coming deer season for hogs and deer. I got a feeling I am gonna lose my new gun.

rok - depends on the 70 grainer... note that i specifically called out the speer bullet, which is extremely short for its weight, and does stabilize in most 22-250's. however, given its weight the bc is terrible. so it starts slow, and just gets worse - thus most people move back to 52's or 55's in the 22-250.

My 1/14" Rem. M700 does extreamly well with the Sierra 63gr Semi-Ptd bullet. However, it scatters the 65gr BTSpt.

It shoots quite well likewise with the Hornady 60gr PtSpt.

I'd use either one of these or the 64gr Winchester SemiPtSpt, if it proves to shoot well.

My experience with the 60gr Nosler Part. is that 1.5moa is about as good as it does in any .22cf I've tried them in.

I like H380, and RL15 for my .22-250 "deer" loads. Should do well on the smaller pigs with well placed shots. My experience with the .22mag is to leave it in the rack if pigs are possible. Ditto the .17HMR.

Goosetapo, we got too many pigs down here to waste money on larger caliber ammo that is why I use my .17hmr a lot, I ride my pastures and usually catch pigs in the evening, the damage the little .17 does internally is amazing and if the pigs runs off, it is a dead pig anyway. we just are overrun with them. some days I can count as many as 100 pigs or more, a few days ago I could see 3 herds of em from top of a hill and each group had 30 or more pigs in each, not counting the little football size ones you cant see in the grass. I wish I knew how to post, I got lots of dead pigs shot with my little Savage .17. I like to use an 7-08, .308 and a 6.5 as well, they are great for really long shots. tackdrivers.

When I had my Ruger #1-V,I shot only Sierra 63grn Spitzers, deadly accurate (scary).

will a 1:8 twist handle the 55gners ie the lighter bullets?

oz_lowrider, yes for most, only some of the frangible versions may fragment due to hi revs from the 1in8". It's less of a problem to over stabilize the light bullets than if you under stabilize the heavy ones.

Dakotasin- with what you started saying about the Speer 70gr. bullet, I was thinking about giving it a try, until what you finished saying about it. I think I will stay with the 52-55 grain bullets because I like the tiny groups with them.
