22 250 load recommendations

So i was in cabelas and they had some 22 250 components on sale and decided to start loading for that caliber. i had 4 powders on my shelf that should would work cfe 223, 4064, 3031, and varget. Rifle is a 700 sps varmint 1 in 14 twist 26in barrel. Bullet i purchased is nosler ballistic tip 40gr BT. Looking for recommendations on a place to start.
 
All of your powders will work well, but the CFE is a ball powder and will run through the measure like quicksilver. It also gives great velocity. IMR4064 and IMR3031 are long extruded granules, and can give mixed results in some measures. Varget works well for some people, but I'm not a big fan.
I shoot 52gr A-Max and IMR3031 in my custom 22-250 Mauser.
Look at www.hodgdon.com for the loads that you might want to try, and start low and work up. Do not exceed listed maximum.

Everybody has a .308 load to share that works really well in their rifle that they worked up. i realize every rifle is different and loads dont work the same in every rifle. like the .308 the 22-250 has to have some powders that respond better than others. my .308 really likes 4064 for heavier bullets. reloader 15 for lighter. several people i talk to have similar results. i guess thats the info that might interest me the most more than specific data.
 
The Varget is excellent with the 40gr bullet. Max is just a bit over 40.0gr. Start at 36.0 and work upward with an eye towards accuracy.
But, be careful with this powder and bullet. It is very erosive on the throat if you get barrel too hot. A friend fried his Savage M12 Varminter in a single afternoon on a Colorado praraie dog town.
I prefer a 50-60gr bullet. My rifle really likes anything Sierra with H380 @ 39.0gr. (occasional to often 1-hole groups; depends on brass...).
Shoot slowly and clean frequently.... makes the barrels last longer.
My second favorite powder behind H380 is Reloader 15. 35.0gr works for 50-60gr bullets...just a tad slower than the H380 in my rifle (3,700fps w/55gr bullets). RL15 gives ~3,650fps...But a bit more economical too.
 
The best luck I had in my 22-250, also a 1:14, was Reloader 10x. Excellent results, all the way to 55 grains. I tried a pile of other stuff, Benchmark, Varget, H-380, etc. None of them performed as well as 10x.
 
Brian, earlier I came across a little sharply - my bad.

In my 1:14 26", the following work well together:

- RL-15 with Hornady 53gr HP match; MV of +/- 3,700fps.

- H-380 with Hornady 55gr V-max; MV of +/- 3,600fps.

- Varget with Nosler 52gr HPBT custom comp; MV of +/- 3,700fps.




Strongbad: I will have to try the 10x you suggested. What bullet worked well with 10x in your 1:14 rifle?
 
I use IMR4007SSC with that Nosler bullet, but you don;t have that powder. Of the ones you have, I would start with 4064 and Varget.

4064 has been one of my favs for the .308, most accurate groups for me anyway. think i will start there. my first choice of bullet was the 52 gr bthp but my buddy wanted to try some too since we have the same gun and kinda pushed me towards the 40gr. tried to explain that accuracy is always better than speed and im sure the BC is higher with the 52gr. But all he was interested in 4300fps!

probably going to go two ways with this one 52 gr for me and 40gr for him. pretty sure this will be itneresting when we put em to paper!
 
My rifle loves 34.5 grains of varget with 52 grain Amax bullets. Give it a try if you want. I use bechrest cci primers and shoot groups smaller than my fingernail at 100 yds.

The June-July 2007 issue of the excellent 'Handloader magazine' has a useful 9-page article with close to 300 recipies for the 22-250. Bullet weights range from 40 to 60 grains and there's every powder under the sun.

Do u notice a difference in the cci br primers in any caliber? so far for large rifle i have used fed 210m only. i do know the cci cost a few pennies more.
 
Only thing I have noticed is the Fed primers seat a bit easier/looser than cci. I don't know if anyone else has noticed this. I have had a few that would back out as I tap the brass on the table after noticing them seat too easily. I don't worry about the whole thinner cup of one primer or harder cup of another primer. I just find the best grouping load and establish fundamental shooting at longer ranges. Typical hunting ranges here (Arizona) can be from 300 yards to well beyond 500 yards. As far as match accuracy, only matches I have been to are open sights only. I buy CCI primers because I like the packaging vs. Fed. & Rem. Sounds silly to some, but I don't like the primers held in sideways. Sometimes they roll off the primer flip tray and it is a PITA to get under the bench and look for a lost primer.
 
My Savage 12FV likes enough IMR4064 to drive a 40 gr. ballistic tip to 4,000 fps. I have tried about every single ball powder for the .22-250 looking for equivalent accuracy without success. 760 came the closest. H380 showed some promise but threw a lot of flyers. So I continue to put up with a powder that won't run through the Dillon powder measure.
 
I just loaded up a spread from 35 to 37.7 of 4064. Going off book numbers from 3900 to 4200 fps will let everyone know what happens. Thanks again to everyone for your response. The next load will be with the 52 gr amax.
 
i've got a 1:12" 26" barrel on my savage. 32.0 gr Varget under a 55 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip shoots well under 1/2" at 100 yds and gives me about 3400 fps. 38.0 gr of H380 under a 55 gr Berger Flat Base shoots just as good and gives about 3700 fps.

i've also got loads for 52 gr SMK and 40 gr Vmax that shoot well. it's not very difficult to find a good load for the .22-250.

Glad it worked out for you. I've noticed a significant reduction in group sizes when I uniform the primer pocket, uniform the flashhole, and neck turn the brass. I don't know if you shoot long range but the groups get real good at 200 yds. and beyond. I zero about 1.5" high at 100 yds. and hit just under 0 at 380 yds. Very fast, very flat.
 
All my rifles in .22-250 like IMR-3031 and Hornady 40gr ZMax bullets. AA-2460 also shoots well with 40gr Zombie bullets. The -4064 powders shoot well with Nosler 52gr Custom Comp bullets.
 
My CZ 550 shot best with 39 grains of H380 and either 50 grain Sierra Blitzkings or 52 grain Sierra Matchkings. I went with the 50 grain Blitzking as my groundhog round. I have shot 2 with them.

My Ruger 77V does well on a rather top load of H414 with magnum primer and a 52 gr SMK. I find the present enthusiasm for very light very fast bullets kind of an interesting throwback.
