My 12 year old son owns a pump pellet hand gun, pump pellet rifle, BB gun, and a compond bow. He loves to target shoot. We are looking to buy a 22 long rifle (bolt action) for Christmas. My main concern is the range / travel distance of the 22. Does anyone have a recommendation for a 'shorter' distance / lower velocity 22 LR?

Well there are a variety of CB cap and subsonic .22s that are milder than long rifles, but you still must have a bullet trap or berm. You can't just launch them out across the yard or even a field and hope for the best.

I second the Aguila vote (if you can find it). Lot's of places carry the CB caps and they might be easier to find.

Aquilia says not to shoot Collibris in rifles, too much chance of a stuck bullet. A friend has shot them successfully from his Browning BL22 but the maker warns against it.

i occasionally shoot regular colibri's (not the super colibri's) out of my marlin 60 just fine and have not had any problems with the bullet getting stuck in the barrel. i've been shooting indoors at a pellet trap i stuffed with magazines to help slow down the bullet. the bullets are somewhat accurate for close ranges but the biggest problem i have is with the lead. i'm not sure if you were planning on shooting indoors or not, but real cartridges used lead primers and the bullets themselves are made out of lead and this should be a concern. unless you have very good ventilation around, it probably wouldn't be a great idea for a child to continually shoot them indoors.

The manufacturers warning aginst using them in rifles is just that, a warning, and unsubstantiated at that. I've fired plenty of Super Colibris through my Marlin Model 81 bolt action without a hiccup. Can't comment on the CCI's as I don't know how their velocity compares to the Aguilas.

The Super Colibri's are great.
100's & 100's of rounds fired through a Henry lever .22, never a stuck round, perfect functioning.
Very quiet out of a rifle, pretty good pop out of handgun.
Buy by the brick, you'll love 'em.
500 or so FPS, lethal to HouseEaters (squirrels) and rats.

Having chronographed the Super Colibri out of my Rossi pump rifle with a 23" barrel I got 485fps. Never had any bullets stick in the barrel even using the now discontinued Colibri which is the same as the Super Colibri but loaded to 100fps lower velocity.
So the 20 grain bullet of the Super Colibri at 485fps will produce 10 foot pounds of energy which is same energy that a 177 pellet rifle produces shooting a 8 grain pellet at 750fps. The SC is really quiet so no hearing protection is needed.

Thank you for all of the responses to the post regarding low velocity / shorter distance 22 loads. I bought a Savage Mark II bolt action (with a 10 shot clip) for David. Bottom line: If your son is interested in target shooting he will want/need accurate ammo. Which will be the standard velocity Long Rifle ammo by various makers. So forget "short range" loads and concentrate on finding a gun club with shooting range or other safe place to shoot.
