22LR Ammo Choices

I was shooting the bulk 550 Fed stuff because it was cheap, but then I tried the Federal AutoMatch Target in two pistols and an AR upper. It shot 4 to 5 times better groups in all three, and ran 100% for half a box that day. I liked it so much I ordered 10 boxes from Midway.

Then I cleaned my .22 AR and when I shot it with the new AutoMatch, I was getting some misfires. (Argghh). I bought some Winchester bulk stuff to see if it did better, but they gave 50% misfires. (band head). I started looking for what had gone wrong. Well, after I cleaned the AR I put the hammer spring on the hammer backwards (Duh me). When I fixed that the AutoMatch went back to firing 100%, and the Winchester fired 98/9%.

The AutoMatch costs a little more than the bigger bulk packs, but feeds great, shoots great, and is still cheaper than premium .22 stuff.

This goes for my guns. YMMV.

Auto Match has always worked well in all of my 22LR handguns and rifles. Even the finicky ones that get indigestion on other ammo.

And I'll echo the advisory: avoid Remington 22lr ammo!

I use either the Federal Automatch or Federal's American Eagle. I am surprised how well Ameran Eagle shoots considering it is so cheap. This is with my Buckmark.

Have not seen the Aquila hyper velocity mentioned yet. I purchased some from Aimsurplus due to the stated velocity of 1740fps but have not shot a lot of it yet. The problem with going from 1200fps to 1740 your POA/POI changes which depending on your purposes of shooting a .22 can be unsatisfactory. I have so much Federal bulk that all my .22s are sighted in for that ammo. When I finally get around to working with the Aquila I will re-zero the weapons with that ammo. I have not noticed that big a difference between the CCI and Federal bulk as far as POA/POI. Just my observed results.

In two rifles the best groups have been with Remington Golden Bullets. Repeatedly. Federal Automatch was a disappointment. We shot the GB's out to 200 yds with good results. Just goes to show you have to test. I was really expecting big things out of the Automatch and it didn't happen.

There is a good use for a big box of Remington Golden Bullets.

If you have a Ruger Mark III and want to practice malfunction drills I assure you that by the time you've shot the full box you'll be very good at "tap, rack, bang".

To do it justice, it works just fine in the bolt action rifles and the revolver. But we buy Federal or another (red box, the name escapes me at the moment), for the Mark III.

I like federal 550 and winchester 555

Winchester Dynapoint GT makes some great target bulk but I heard rumors you can't get it at dicks anymore.

My standard go-to round is Federal Bulk Pack, you can get it at WalMart for about $20. It comes loose in a maroon box.

It works just fine in my 10/22.

I shoot a lot of Federal Bulk Packs because they are the cheapest. I do find that my AR upper does tend to Jam or miss fire on them about 5% of the time. Mostly it seems to be related to inconsistencies in pressures within a lot causing the AR not to cycle fully. The other issue is that occasionally the primer does not ignite. Good for practice of clearing a miss fire or the old tap, rack and get going again. The CCI's are more reliable with less miss fires but I can't get them locally in bulk. Winchester Wildcat have always worked well also but I can no longer find them in bulk boxes either. Federal Bulk Packs are currently my most economical choice and if I am doing some serious hunting or a competition I will spend the extra money for something more reliable.

If I'm shooting tin cans and such, I like the Federal bulk, but when I'm serious, I'll use CCI Stingers...Whatever you hit with 'em stays hit.

Not all Remington 22 lr ammo is bad, it's just the 550 bulk packs that Wal Mart sells. I still use and have no problems with Remington Yellowjackets.

rugerman07 is right, Remington has some brands that are okay. I have always liked the Vipers rather well when I could find them.

But for true bulk ammo, Remington is widely regarded as bottom of the barrel. This includes GB and Thunderbolts. I don't know of anything else they sell as bulk as of now.

Remington's quality is a disappointment, having used it since 1979. Nothing like what it used to be. Viper and Yellowjacket function better than the Golden Bullet and Thunderbolt brands. I have a couple bricks of older Subsonic that work well and use them sparingly. They have been a favorite for squirrel hunting.
What works best for me now for alot of plinking have been the big box Federals and CCI Blazer for our semi-auto rifles and pistols. The Winchester Dynapoints have been OK. CCI would be my overall choice whether plinking or hunting small game, but I'm trying to clear out out Remington and Winchester stock (mostly in bolt rifles or revolvers) now.
Friends don't give friends Remington.

I like Blazer 40 grain lead. Internet search it for best prices on 5k round cases.

Any body want to sent their Golden Bullets my way I will take them. Saves y'all the aggravation of shooting them.

We've been stocking up on CCI Blazers whenever they are on sale locally at $1.50/box. Just finished my second Appleseed using Blazers. 300 rounds through the rifle on Saturday without a single failure of any sort. My g/f was shooting Blazers also with the same results.

I like the Federal bulk pack, but Walmart here wants nearly $20 for the Federal 550 packs. So, Blazers cost less on sale and only a few bucks more at the standard $2/box rate. For that price, I'll just keep buying more Blazers since they run 100% in everything.

I wonder if the fact that Remington's Golden Bullet 550 bulk packs are not packaged individually in 50 round boxes like CCI Blazers and some other bulk packs are has anything to do with their poor quality? Are they getting damaged in transit? I've noticed some very small dents and scratches, on their bullets and shell casings and the inside of the carton always seems to be dirty with what appears to be lead markings.

I hope somebody from Remington reads this.

My semi-autos like CCI, Federal, and Winchester, at least as good as I can shoot. I noticed the got dirty to the point of stoppage very quickly with Remington ammunition.

CCI Blazer is what I primarily buy for general use. My CZ does well enough with when I practice that I don't really have any incentives to use match ammo (though I have a small stash of RWS R50). I'm sure I'll Eley and Wolf MT some day, why not?

But I get CCI Blazer and I've had no real complaints with it all. I did have a ground total of ONE squib one time, but given that it's bulk cheap ammo, stuff like this is expected from time to time, no?

The federal bulk stuff comes loose in the box. No issues there

Hopefully if the rain lets up tomorrow I will have a chance to experiment with four different rounds to attempt to get good results. I have the Federal's left over, then going to try the Laupa Midas M, followed by CCI Stinger and finish off with CCI Mini-Mags. Going to try 5 shot groups on different targets at various ranges. Might be interesting in the results, just don't count super accuracy due these old eyes.
