Hey guys!

I just got a new (well actually it is 30 years old but it's new for me) Ruger 10/22. Took it out to the range today and it shot flawlessly!! I'm very pleased. The only deal is, that every once in a while I would get a dud, basically I'd hear "click" and I'd clear the round and it had been struck along the rim but did not fire.

Out of 200 or so shots fired I probably had about 8 duds. Not horrible, I know but my main question is: "Is this typical of most .22lr ammo, or did I buy crap?" It did seem to be running a little dirty.

The ammo was a 550 count of Remington Golden Bullet I bought at Wal-mart.

Let me know guys, Thanks!
Daniel

30 years old........

Could be just a slightly weak firing pin spring . Just might need a through cleaning. Could be faulty ammo. Could be something else all together.
A lot of......could be`s. I`m sure other guys will chime in . Good luck. :)

boss...you're probably gonna get mixed reviews on this, but you're not the first to have that happen. I bought a bit of it a while back @ WW when all ammo was getting scarce. I haven't shot any of it yet, but I've heard similar stories...Good luck,
Tac

Welp, there's your problem. I haven't ever bought a box of Remington rimfire cartridges that worked very well. I've got a box of 550 Federal .22LR that hasn't goofed yet; I'm about halfway through it. Remington always gives me problems. Just my experience though.

Remington Golden
There's your problem right there. They have the worst failure rate by far of any 22 LR's I have ever used. Remington centerfire is fine tho, just not their rimfire stuff.

I agree.

Buy better ammo.

CCI always works for me every time, in a whole raft of different 22's.

Sweet I'll go with the Federal next time for sure!!! I'm just glad there is nothing wrong with my gun. And yes the first thing I did is completely disassemble it and clean the crap out of it! lol.

I won't use Golden Bullets ever again. Makes the gun extra dirty, makes your fingers look like they belong to Goldmember, and they give me the most malfunctions of any brand

I have the best luck with Winchester HV and Federal. Both are clean to both the gun and my fingers, and give minimal malfunctions (last box of 550 Federal through my Buck Mark only have one failure)

Well some .22 ammo is very mediocre.

I remember back in JROTC in high school, a combination of cheap .22 ammo and rifles that were never cleaned led to a squibb misfire that resulted in the bolt of my remington 40 getting stuck in the open position.

Give the gun a good cleaning and try some other ammo. Pistols can be finicky sometimes.

Ive got a S&W 22-A1 pistol and it hates Rem. Golden bullet. It doesent like to feed, or eject, and ive noticed a lot of duds also. Federal is what i stick with. And that .22 pistol is amazing for the money. I know ive put prob 6-8000 rounds through it and its still goin. Try some different ammo, and youll prob agree with these guys. Note: I do like rem. center fire.

So you had a 4% dud rate. That is a little high even for Remington. The problem as others have told you is buying Remington promotional 22 ammo. They have the highest dud rate of any of the manufactures in the last 5 years. Federal and CCI seems to be the best even with bulk packs.

It happens with a lot of the bulk package I buy from walmart. The great thing is that it will shoot. Do not discard the bullet. Instead rotate it in the chamber or magazine to where the firing pin will strike a different place on the rim. It may take as much as 3 or 4 attempts but I personally have never gone higher. Buying the more expensive bullets like cci or target match will eliminate this ftf.

I never had any real duds with Golden Bullet, but a lot of weak rounds that wouldn't cycle the action. I used the rest of the box in my bolt action.

Y'all leave the Remington stuff on the shelf then so I can buy it when I need it. I burn 2000-3000rds a month of the stuff and have nary a problem with it. It's also true to its advertised velocity while Federal bulk flies 100fps slow.

happens sometimes, i have re chambered them (after they have sat for a time out) and they fired when struck in another spot

Remington golden bullets about 20 duds in 500.Federal 550 bulk pack about two or three per pack.Winchester Wildcats about 15-25 duds per 500.CCI minimags usually 100% go bang. All .22 lr ammo is suspect these days. And factor into this what ammo your particular gun likes it could be better or worse.tom.

well i gues i'm not going to be the first one to say its the bulk ammo. really, thats all i buy since i have to keep all of my kids shooting.

I think W E G hit the nail on the head in his post, and if you can buy 550 rounds for $15.00...who cares if there are a few duds

I care if I have spent 45 minutes waiting out a bushytail, only to see him scurry away again when I have to clear a jam.

No problem at the range though I guess, I would just rather not buy unreliable ammo.
